August 5, 2022 <https://gallery.mailchimp.com/6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a/images/cf04e6fd-150d-4420-a926-ee7a36f2d944.png> FEDERAL NEWS Counties Plan Funding as Opioid Settlement Payout Nears With counties poised to receive much-needed funding from the national opioid settlement, planning on investment of those funds is reaching full speed. Still calculating the cost of the services they deployed to meet the needs of the painkiller-turned-heroin epidemic, the general sense was the counties are taking a careful look at how the funding can best be allocated. The epidemic, largely fueled by legal prescriptions of painkillers, marketed in a way that suggested they would not be habit forming, stressed county budgets from law enforcement, to rehabilitation, to the foster system and coroner’s office. The $26 billion from the manufacturers, distributors and pharmacies involved in the painkiller process will be split among state and local governments. The transformed hotel serves as a new transitional home to incoming Ukrainians arriving in the U.S. or as a place for families to wait for loved ones still fighting in Ukraine. Spokane County partnered with Thrive International as the subrecipient to a $1.7 million in the Washington Commerce Grant to provide the umbrella administration for allowable reimbursements for resettlement expenditures. Assistance for incoming refugees can include, but is not limited to, paying for rent and housing needs, transportation, healthcare needs, employment needs, food, clothing and other essential items or services. In order to maximize the impact of all three programs, the SBO is coordinating our efforts to move Washington’s broadband access goals forward. As part of these efforts, the SBO is developing a joint pipeline of projects and needs your assistance! Please take a few minutes to complete this short survey. The information you provide enables all three programs to advocate for funding and illustrate a comprehensive picture of the need for broadband infrastructure funding throughout the state. The Legislature will consider funding compatibility projects that impact the economy, environment, or quality of life opportunities for local communities. Eligible applicants include local governments, federally recognized Indian tribes; and other entities in an agreement with a State military installation under the US Department of Defense Readiness and Environmental Protection Integration program. Applications will be considered for projects that focus on: * Eliminating an existing incompatible use through property acquisition. * Assisting in the recovery and protection of endangered species. * Increasing the availability of affordable housing. * Retrofitting existing uses to increase their compatibility. * Diversifying the local economy to reduce economic dependence. * Replacing jobs lost due to a reduction in military presence. * Improving or enhancing the local economy, environment, or quality of life impacted by the presence of military activities. Applications are due to the Department of Commerce by 5 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 15, 2022.
