vVREREAS, word has been transmitted to this Board of
County Commissioners, through the President of the Port
Townsend Chamber of Commerce, that the Washington State Arts
Commission presently contemplates the location of a Cultural
Center at one of the State Parks of the State of Washington,
and
WHEREAS, within the past several years sundry concerned
citizens .of Jefferson County, in conjunction with other like-
minded individuals, civic bodies and governmental agencies,
have accomplished much toward this objective, - witness:
1. The printing and distribution of books and other
literature depicting and describing the Victorian architecture
which,reflects and denotes Port Townsend as THE PICTURESQUE
CITY;
2. The thousands of visitors to Port Townsend who have
taken advantage of conducted tours, and personal visits, to
the points of interest and educational value as set out in
such literature;
3. The establishment by the University of Washington
of Port Townsend as a situs for the conduct, in extension
service, of a Summer School of the Arts;
4. The designation of the City of Port Townsend by the
University of British Columbia as a place for sundry of its
students to sketch, paint, study and capture an environment
unique;
5. The selection of the City of Port Townsend by a
group of Seattle professionals and the building of a theatre,
to advance appreciation of what might well be called "Summer
Stock";

6. The creation at Fort Flagler State Park of the
Pacific Northwest Music Camp, and
~VHEREAS, there are now two State Parks, each with an
historic background, {a third one contemplated} within a
few short miles distant from the City of Port Townsend,
therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of County Commissioners
for Jefferson County, Washington, and we, the members thereof
each and severally, do hereby commend to the said Washington
State Arts Commission for consideration, the selection of
one of the State Parks neighboring the City of Port Townsend
as one whereat there may be established a facility to provide
for the growth and development of the arts, as contemplated
by statute, and
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED
That within budgetary limitations this Board of County
Commissioners does hereby declare its intention to aid and
assist financially in the furtherance thereof, should the
choice of the Commission be in the Port Townsend area of
Jefferson County.
