At your request I visited Jefferson County parcel 601342015 to evaluate the classification
of two streams shown on your Critical Areas Map.
I visited the site on December 6, 2005. I found that there, in fact, were two streams on
the parcel however the location of each is somewhat off. The LiDAR image shows a
more accurate location of the streams.
The more northern stream is shown as a Type 5 (orNs) water. My observations confirm
this. At the time of my site visit very little water was flowing in the channel, and it was
flowing on the surface only in places. It is clear however that during heavy rain events
this channel carries high volumes of runoff At the bottom of the slope before the water
enters Hood Canal the channel becomes unconfined resulting in sheet flow as evidenced
by exposed cobble.
The more southern stream is also shown as a Type 5 water. This classification is
incorrect. The stream currently meets the physical characteristics of a Type 3 ( or F)
water. At least for the length of the subject parcel, the channel is flowing, has a bank. full
width of over two feet, and the gradient is less than sixteen percent.
Of perhaps more concern than the stream types are the slopes above the channels. These
are quite steep. on the order of fifty to seventy percent. Depending on future activity a
geo-technical report may be necessary. Additionally if the landowners future plans
include removing trees for a home site or other purpose a Forest Practice Application will
most likely be required.
