If allowed to proceed, it would mean 250 new wells, 37 miles of roads, 368 miles of pipelines, and emissions equal to 66 coal plants running for a year. We still have an opportunity to oppose it before the comment period ends next week. Send a message now. <http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=e49917f205f010a3523892994b1a35ff63cb060d586c9684cd673f1 2575eb74e7ddbf8dddd94d7ef81be7dae42cc30d8b26ba727d9420989d6e2abdba89b42f2> When I first visited the Western Arctic in the mid-1990s, I learned from indigenous communities about their deep, sacred connections to the native land and oceans. The federal government had recently opened up the area to drilling for the first time and I had the opportunity to hear local communities' concerns firsthand about what they feared would come from oil development and its impacts on food security and their livelihood. The Oil Industry promised these developments would be new state-of-the-art technologies and only a very, very small footprint with minimum impacts. They lied, and they're continuing to lie to push new developments forward. The Willow Project is one of the largest new oil proposals in the country. Take action now to protect the Western Arctic and Indigenous Communities' ability to survive. <http://click.emails.sierraclu b.org/?qs=e49917f205f010a37d86cfe4aabc178b53b5be36e21c4d84412dd037cda03eb96d7942183cbbfdabfb3674b5489fbad5925246ee9db143732a60f9370ae07763> This summer, over 30 years later, I returned to the Western Arctic. Flying over the area this summer, it was shocking to see the drastic changes. I've seen the maps and I've been deeply engaged in the conservation fights -- but I still wasn't prepared. The industrial sprawl of oil developments -- pipelines, roads, gravel pits, and developments -- was eye-opening. I have heard directly from folks in the villages about the severe impacts on their communities -- in what should be the most pristine air in North America, there was recently a gas leak that went on uncontrolled for weeks and weeks. The lakes are draining, the permafrost is melting and even when flying overhead in a plane, the oil developments seemingly go on forever. The Willow Project would be detrimental to not only local communities but also to the Biden Administration's stated climate and public lands goals. Submit a personal comment now to demand this sacred land be protected for generations to come. <http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=e49917f205f010a381c2915af5bd2ef141345cf34b8f9f081c36ce4e6251044c4a170f1b5d1306fad5020763663379430632194 b9c97b81b46298d94b056be9a> The Oil Industry lied to us -- and they continue to lie. This is nothing close to a small footprint. The Western Arctic is irreplaceable. Thank you for taking action.
