Hello friends!
It’s that time of year: fog, summer programs coming to a close, school programs around the corner, Wooden Boat Festival preparations shifting from a dull to a slightly desperate and
super exciting roar—late August ain't boring around the Maritime Center! All of that, plus staff transitions and 50 cases of wine. August is what the kids call “Extra.” Here’s all the
news from now:
Summer programs were a huge success! This week is bittersweet for fans of summer, boats, and kids: we are wrapping up the last of the summer camps. It’s been a good one: more kids, less
hiccups, more fun and benevolent piracy than I can remember in recent memory. It could be proximity bias, but I’ve got a kid with peers who are now NWMC customers and I have gained
a lot of credibility with her friends. Our camps are so good that boats are cool to 7-year-olds, and so am I, by proxy… unless you’re my 7-year-old. We’ve also had a successful summer
of pilothouse simulator tours and boat tours on the Admiral Jack; most weekends we were completely booked—look for an expanded schedule next year! A huge thank you to our summer staff,
we couldn’t inspire young people on the water if y’all weren’t inspiring. Thank you!
Wooden Boat Festival rides again! Good god it’s been a long time coming. It’s been darned near three pandemic-infused years since the last time Port Townsend was graced by wooden boats
and their fans packed cheek to jowl in Point Hudson for a weekend of celebration, fellowship and learning- but it’s happening! Thanks to the heroics of Festival Director Barb Trailer,
the staff of the Maritime Center, and the hundreds of volunteers, there is, without a doubt, going to be a Wooden Boat Festival in 2022. (Yes, I did tear up a little writing that. No
joke. I am so ready!) This is going to be a good one: great bands, great energy, incredible presentations with truly renowned panelists coming together for the first (and potentially
only) time—seriously, check out the mulit-hull panel and get ready to boat dork out. It’s incredible. Whether you’ve attended all 45 or this will be your first, I hope you come. The
WBF is a weekend that isn’t just fun for boat dorks and non-boat dorks alike (which it is), and it isn’t just soothing to look at gorgeous boats or dance your body parts off at the
nightly party (which it also is), but without fail it’s the spirit of the festival that restores my faith in what’s possible when we lead with our best selves. The spirit of community
is the salve for the kind of rancor we’ve all been living through for the past few years. So much going on, check the website, and if you really want to dive in and become part of the
WBF family, consider volunteering. Free admission, free t-shirt, and you get to help make something awesome happen. Details on that here: https://woodenboat.org/volunteer/ <https://nwmaritime-dot-ya

Ace moving on, Angela moving up. Nothing in life remains static, and for sure not at the NWMC. This month we’re announcing a couple of cool progressions for two key members of our staff.
First, Ace Spragg. In 2011 Ace introduced herself to me and said something like “You’re going to hire me.” She was right, then and usually. Off and on since that moment she has lent
her instructional brilliance to NWMC programs both on the water and online. This fall Ace is going to start lending her brilliance to our cousins across the bay as the Education Director
at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding. Sad to lose her, but honestly couldn’t be more excited for her, the school, and having another strong connection between our two institutions.
Hip Hip!
In other staffing news, this fall Angela Hewitson will transition from managing volunteers and general public engagement to laser-focusing on student recruitment and industry-related
fundraising for Maritime High School. Angela’s kind of a unicorn. She’s someone who cares deeply about diversifying the maritime space, has deep experience in both maritime spheres
and in community organizing, and has a gift for engaging people. Angela is going to close out the Festival and another project this fall and start in earnest soon.
I love it when the NWMC can advance the careers of our employees, both inside the organization and in mission-related roles in other orgs. These are both big wins in my book… and would
love your help in finding people to backfill their roles. More soon!
Housing is at a critical state in PT, and for NWMC too. For all of the good that we do at NWMC, for all of the community value that we create through our mission and programs, it’s all
in jeopardy because of housing. Like artist communities everywhere, low rent creates the opportunity for community, then the community of artists created by the low rent creates the
inspiration for migration for everyone else. Port Townsend is in that cycle, exacerbated by the increase of pandemic-inspired remote workers and climate refugees, and NWMC employees
are feeling the squeeze. Our newer staff members can’t find places to live, our longer-term staff members are getting leases non-renewed because the property is converting to an AirBNB,
leases are increasing by 50% in a year and moving from annual to month to month. If the Northwest Maritime Center is going to continue providing education and opportunities to the youth
and aspiring mariners of the region we need to find places for our staff to live. Yes we are engaging and advocating in the community conversations, but what we really need is help
with housing. If you value what we do, and you have a house that is rentable or underutilized, I would LOVE to talk to you about how we might create a housing solution for the folks
that work here. Yes, rentals, and more. This is a complicated and important conversation and I’m looking forward to having it with you if you’re willing. Thanks.
INCOMING DONATION: 50 cases of wine. Do you like supporting the programs of the NW Maritime Center? Do you like wine? If you’re like most of us then you might be in luck.
There are a lot of ways to show your enthusiasm for what the NWMC does: volunteer, help with housing, donate money, donate things we need. In the next week or so, one of our supporters
will be doing the latter, but in a HUGE way. The next time you’re at a NWMC event, while you’re considering how big of a check to write, you may well be drinking wine from a bottle
donated from a supporter’s cellar, but only if it’s good wine. If it’s bad wine, well, we probably had to buy it.
Long way round to two points:
1. We are happy to serve you wine.
2. We are happy to be creative about donations.
If you love what we do, donations to the NWMC make our mission possible and can come in many forms. Do you have 700 bottles of wine that you’d like to donate? We can handle it! Do you
have a boat, with wine, and a condo slip that you’d like to contribute to getting future youth on the water? Bring it!
All of that to say, thanks for believing in us, and let's have a conversation soon about how your enthusiasm can be translated into support.
OK, that’s what I have this month. See you at the Festival!
Be well.
Jake
