in a new program that encourages them to take the necessary courses and exams to obtain a mates’ credential. Unfortunately, as detailed in the graphic below, this requires significant
training time, so it will be several months before we are able to trial full service on our next route up for restoration, Edmonds/Kingston.

Due to the time it takes to train licensed deck officers, it will be sometime next year before we have the captains and mates needed to restore service across the system.
So how did we get here? We lost nearly 100 captains and mates over the past five years due to retirement, separation or resignation. That’s a startling loss considering we need 200 licensed
deck officers to operate our full schedule. We’re currently 25 short of that number.
So why can’t we just hire captains and mates? Around the world, there remains a shortage of mariners affecting the entire industry, including marine transit agencies similar to us like

they would have to go through months of training before they could be a captain or mate with us as the U.S. Coast Guard requires our licensed deck officers to have specific credentialing
and pilotage that most don’t have.

sailings in the peak summer season because of increased demand, schedule delays are more pronounced this year because our service remains below normal levels due to staffing shortages.
Our first priority is safety, and we want to make sure all of our captains and mates are well equipped with the skills needed to work aboard our vessels. This again, will take some time

Colman Dock project hits 1 million labor hours
In a twist of fate, our Colman Dock project will reach a milestone of 1 million labor hours just in time for Labor Day weekend. Since construction began in 2017, nearly two dozen labor
unions have supplied workers like carpenters, pile drivers, plumbers, electricians and roofers to rebuild our flagship terminal in Seattle. Twenty percent of the labor hours – or 200,000
hours – have been by apprentices, ensuring that this project helps to build the strength of our region’s skilled labor force.

a major accomplishment as we prepare to open the final two-thirds of the new terminal building in the next couple of months.”

Riders 18 years old and under board for free starting Oct. 1
We will begin free fares for riders 18 years of age and younger on all our routes starting Oct. 1 as a result of this year’s Move Ahead Washington transportation package. We’ll provide

Tactile maps installed at Mukilteo terminal
It’s now easier for people who are blind or have low vision to navigate our Mukilteo terminal independently! On Monday, we installed three tactile maps that provide information in Braille,
including the location of the facility in relation to the surrounding area and what’s inside the terminal.

“I just wanted to offer my appreciation and thanks to the Seattle Terminal ferry staff […]. Specifically [Terminal Attendant Micah] Graham who was not just friendly, but a tremendous
help. I pulled through the toll booth and heard that awful noise that sounded like rubber rubbing indicating a flat tire. […]

We will begin free fares for riders 18 years of age and younger on all our routes starting Oct. 1 as a result of this year’s Move Ahead Washington transportation package. We’ll provide

Tactile maps installed at Mukilteo terminal
It’s now easier for people who are blind or have low vision to navigate our Mukilteo terminal independently! On Monday, we installed three tactile maps that provide information in Braille,
including the location of the facility in relation to the surrounding area and what’s inside the terminal.

“I just wanted to offer my appreciation and thanks to the Seattle Terminal ferry staff […]. Specifically [Terminal Attendant Micah] Graham who was not just friendly, but a tremendous
help. I pulled through the toll booth and heard that awful noise that sounded like rubber rubbing indicating a flat tire. […]
“Having a smaller car (Chevy Bolt), I have no spare but just a "fix a flat" goo system and electric inflator. […] The suggestions are to jack the car up as the seal can be open if the
tire goes fully flat like it was. […] Thankfully, ferry staff pointed me back behind the state patrol area where [Micah] was waiting with a car jack.
“He helped me get the car jacked up and was very patient while waiting for my electric pump to slowly inflate the tire. He helped find the big hole in the tire and drop the car down
