Or is it? There’s no doubt that many tumors can be traced back to damaged DNA. And a lot of cancer research, including the field of precision oncology, has primarily focused on the genetic hardware inside our cells. But is DNA fate? We are made up of over 30 trillion cells. Just about every one of them has at least one genetic misspelling in the DNA letters that spell out our genes. Many misspellings hit key genes that control cell growth and survival. But cancer — even in a breast cancer patient who harbors 30 trillion dangerous BRCA mutations — only arises from a handful of cells, perhaps even just one. That’s a pretty great ratio of non-cancer to cancer. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center researchers are working to understand better how our bodies work hard to keep cancer-associated mutations from taking over. Read about the biology <https://secure.fredhu tch.org/site/R?i=cQnaF1HcLNFFCvyYTwkTLK6aqV6qvit979lm4GdCbc9pfUt9AhDC0g> behind how our bodies keep cancer at bay in a two-part series <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=SOD3_XG_jj_Xc2fcCngYQUFX MseG3v0khC38krbaO6bONoNO-F_NRQ> . ________________________________ Dr. Anthony Fauci visits Seattle <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=napvnjDjbY02U5E3iL-s_matHUtGj61teHH51qcLJdKQROcqqk6OfA> Dr. Anthony Fauci visited Seattle August 10 to see old friends, reminisce and accept an award from Fred Hutch. In an appearance on the Hutch campus, Fauci sat down with renowned virologist and President and Director Emeritus Dr. Larry Corey to discuss their friendship and collaborations on pandemic research spanning nearly four decades. That evening at T-Mobile Park, Fauci delivered a ceremonial first pitch to Seattle Mariners’ manager Scott Servais and received an honorary 2022 Hutch Award <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=6MZcv0wrn4z0hkji7fGk425LiZAyA0tlA os4_beyvi4QXRXyC9zupQ> . ________________________________ The Latest Transformative $78M gift to establish new precision oncology institute <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=BW8_v3GfFyRO4C4DyYIMEsOBz4xU6riu1tBVJ8Av1un-my1jqXPA8w> A commitment by Stuart Sloan and his wife Molly Sloan of $78M to establish the Stuart and Molly Sloan Precision Oncology Institute is the largest single gift in Fred Hutch’s 47-year history. It will go toward the recruitment of an institute director and scientific programs that will aim to spark innovative new discoveries, and a new building to house the laboratory space and enabling technologies critical to those discoveries. COVID-19 complacency: ‘A hard shift for the immunocompromised’ <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=ssSZNoerOBS2kKfeAgZykew8W4D2Y78Qcc25so3QYsLMrG8koujZbw> Even with vaccines and antivirals, cancer patients and many others are still vulnerable to infection. Fred Hutch experts offer their safety tips and best practices for navigating the evolving pandemic. First-of-its-kind clinic combines transplant and oncology expertise <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=yBohRx7zEzSlakRoLC7EVadLoXW8oayLh-KYhhFInf8aXYq8EGVfTw> The Cancer and Organ Transplant Clinic opened its doors last September as a multidisciplinary consult clinic which partners oncologists across 12 different cancer types with four transplant doctors who specialize in heart, lung, liver and kidney transplants. Making immunotherapy more effective against small cell lung cancer <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=x-L7iK0YiZjt80Fk6kfAx8AzoYZYCpQ1LmCovQXwyNDuux2VjEtPrQ> Making small cell lung cancer, or SCLC, more visible to the immune system could improve responses to immunotherapy drugs called checkpoint inhibitors, according to new research from Fred Hutch. What viruses can teach us about ourselves <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=JYwK4sZewe1Ts32YpdsoygoU-JZBtpo5sh_RcS90SA85dLJf8Y1jyw> Dr. Daphne Avgousti studies viruses and the ways that they hijack fundamental structures in our cells. The Fred Hutch researcher focuses on how viral proteins take advantage of our DNA packaging system that enables all six feet of our DNA to fit into a single cell. All in: Obliteride 2022 unites thousands to help cure cancer faster <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=H3Fu87phCB-UOKBYIDHRTGF6VDrstpxn0fkYr7CZIke4fYpI3CaIqg> Sun, sweat, and smiles combined on Aug. 12 and 13 as thousands of people gathered in Seattle for Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center’s 10th annual Obliteride weekend. A record-breaking 5,500 people on more than 450 teams joined this year’s celebration, virtually and in person, to have fun, honor loved ones and raise funding and awareness for groundbreaking research at Fred Hutch. Maria Toro Moreno is named a Hanna Gray Fellow <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=ZGumh5sRjuEn_Pn8ILopklt7amloS-JbujBsDQEjH3Q8tEVoiTk5NA> Dr. Maria Toro Moreno, a postdoctoral fellow at Fred Hutch, was named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Hanna Gray Fellow. Jointly mentored by evolutionary biologist Dr. Harmit Malik and computational and molecular biologist Dr. Arvind “Rasi” Subramaniam, Toro Moreno studies microproteins, proteins of fewer than 100 amino acids that have been mostly overlooked in biology. ________________________________ Base 2 Space is October 2 Scale the Space Needle’s 832 open-air stairs to benefit Fred Hutch and the Space Needle Foundation. <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=1H6hLoMhfx4JaknNpIa0CiyTR5aZnfajsYJb0gaz5e847JhcQh9aaA> ________________________________ Share this newsletter with family or friends <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=xsCtnXhQelnXBlFAX73NqKa2G5rx8rlWJTYyFd8RnQjs40SKDjgnqQ> <https://secure.fredhutch.org/images/content/pagebuilder/divider-gradient-648.png> Fred Hutch 1100 Fairview Ave. N. / Mail Stop J5-200 / Seattle, WA 98109 fredhutch.org <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=lKOCcE1XaOadg4ekPeNhiCWWQpWyUMw6hBhxkfMj33GuCduoossiqA> <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=lKXYW5uUyoI8XqLpcAPYmVTnu-Pm9mgKhznaQ6uQZ24KhOg4pthtmA> <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=RX54UJUbQQ7tWe-2W_IJrhje5joU7NL3TT8PhwHl63QCulVbQwrfPw> <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=RunBgXJ0soM9SeZOUEuat8tnxEqqLoGIk2Vwp3PLRDXgh7Gn9nbMWw> <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=qjeuByDXYZMo9jLiYrseKPAnGRWilBeZT22aXMcWm3EsOh2A7hurxA> <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=0sO3ut2tB2rIasbkzcfWxSxAaPfJlANRJkOzW3PKLwiUiZvm-31zjg> <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=ebJgAcebQNHnpezcRRe0GPIhywtNkgEK3-fZvQ-kbM0bjCOu5KUr2w> If you don't want to receive further email updates from Fred Hutch, you can change your email preferences <http://engage.fredhutch.org/site/CO?i=yFwPTnc2qM4-RDmDaq7sBddCsH7fDnu1AhRGW8bSaD-XMvxGXKQJ3f thB-ff_0uQ&cid=1021> . © 2022 Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center.
