BOOKLOVERS’ CAFÉ hosted by Cris Wilson Alternate Tuesdays and repeats the following Sunday, both 12:30-1pm September 18 Jonathan Evison has been assessing America through novels about working-class folks — home health aides, lawn workers. His 2011 novel West of Here seems most in companionship with his latest, Small World. Both are sprawling sagas with dual timelines that follow late-19th-century westerners and their contemporary descendants. Small World opens with a train accident in 2019. The engineer, Walter Bergen, has had a perfect record until this, the final run of his career. The train, heading to Seattle, is “hurtling toward the unavoidable” — both the inevitable crash and, for Walter, an increasing awareness of that final movement in our lives. As ever an enjoyable conversation about engaging characters. CLASS REUNION with DJ host Jerry Osborne Sunday 2-3 pm September 18 1951 Class Reunion September 25 1961 Class Reunion CATS IN OUR LAPS with host Phil Andrus Sunday 7-10pm Cats in Our Laps is a radio variety show which features live and recorded music, interviews, and readings. Each week host Phil Andrus brings in a guest artist or two, sometimes into the KPTZ studio but more often on Zoom. Appearing on each show is Cats’ in Our Laps Poet Laureate Deborah Kate Hammond, a marvelous curator and reader of poetry, and Al Latham, who reads the tea leaves we call the “weather forecast”. September 18 Cats in Our Laps this Sunday, produced by Alex Henley, is from the Tossed Salad archives. In the bowl is the Kings of Mongrel Folks — two northwest folk notables, featuring Mark Graham on harmonica, vocals and witty songs and Orville Johnson on steel guitar and vocals. Also Tossed in are Sylvia Herold and Chuck Ervin, who came to Port Townsend from their home in northern California. Before there was Music 2 Drink Coffee 2 on KPTZ, there was Choro, the Music and the People, an hour of Tossed Salad each month hosted by Al Bergstein. As he does on Cats in Our Laps, Don White reads a short story, this week being “Tennessee’s Partner”, by Bret Harte. September 25 For the first Cats in Our Laps for autumn 2022, Alex Henley has chosen Tossed Salad programs from October 2013 to feature songwriter, vocalist, and cellist Jamie Sieber and local jazz guitarists Chuck Easton and Jim Oliver. Nancy McDaniel talks of her then-new book A Sound Defense, about military bases in the Pacific Northwest; author and wood artist Jim Tolpin describes his then-recent book By Hand and Eye, and the late Catherine McNabb reads Ray Bradbury’s “Anthem Sprinter”. MONDAY MUSIC FROM THAT CARDBOARD BOX with host Donn Trethewey 8-11am September 19 You'll be able to hear something very possibly never heard on KPTZ, or any other station lately — a (short) part of Olivier Messiaen's Quartet for the End of Time. Perfect fare for a lazy Monday morning, huh? Tune in and find out. And, of course, the “usual” stuff from Mussorgsky to Miles Davis and, just maybe, Martin Denny? ATTENTION, PLEASE! Monday 12-12:30pm, repeats at 5pm and again the following Saturday at 12noon KPTZ presents Attention Please! to draw the attention of all of us to the good work being done towards a better informed and more resilient community. September 19 / 24 Quilcene Schools Superintendent Frank Redmon and his colleagues in Count Me in for Quilcene discuss how the failure of their school bond has given rise to volunteers constructing improvements on the school campus and village-wide. Hosted by Phil Andrus. September 26 On Sunday, September 11, a totem pole created by the Lummi Tribal Nation’s House of Tears Carvers bound for the Clean Energy Justice Convergence in Pittsburgh gathering, being hosted by the U.S. Department of Energy on September 21-23, was parked in the north parking lot at the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship for a send-off ceremony. KPTZ Newsman Steve Evans was there. EVERYBODY CAN with host Missy Nielsen Alternating Tuesdays (with reprise t <https://mcusercontent.com/6df05bfd2eaa0ab6bf92aa5cf/images/ada9fa0d-ae8b-31cc-798e-2895825f9df4.jpg> he following week on Thursday), 12:10-12:30pm Everybody Can explores the challenges, hopes, and heartwarming moments that inform the volunteers and non-profit organizations in Jefferson and Clallam County. OUR TOWN with host Maryanne McNellis Alternating Tuesdays and repeats the following Sunday, both 12:30-1pm <https://mcusercontent.com/6df05bfd2eaa0ab6bf92aa5cf/images/fe3793aa-3be3-1ba8-4c80-30c0c990e8be.jpg> September 20 / 25 Maryanne interviews Dr. Liza Mathias, who runs Uptown Dental in PT. She’s a true local, born and raised here. She was torn between art and science when she was in college. After a few years in dead-end, entry-level jobs in Seattle, a friend suggested dentistry might be her answer. Among those she consulted for career advice was Dr. Steven Scharf, her dentist since she was 3 years old. He was extremely enthusiastic. In fact, when she graduated from dental school he wanted her to join him in practice in Port Townsend. A few years later she bought him out — becoming the only female running a dental practice here. Dr. Mathias sees dentistry as the perfect union of art and science. She can be positively lyrical about shaping a crown just right. She views each mouth as an artistic challenge. Sculptors sometimes say they can see the shape that can emerge from inside a block of stone. This dentist believes in the potential beauty in the shapes and fit of teeth. BOOKLOVERS’ CAFÉ hosted by Cris Wilson Alternate Tuesdays and repeats the following Sunday, both 12:30-1pm September 27 In this reprise airing, Cris Wilson interviews Linnea Patrick and Michael Bunnell about Local History. This week the spotlight is on vocalist Roberta Brenza who’ll be doing three from her new release, It’s My Time to Color Now.
