September 16, 2022 <https://gallery.mailchimp.com/6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a/images/cf04e6fd-150d-4420-a926-ee7a36f2d944.png> STATE NEWS Hot, Dry Conditions Driving Western Wildfires During Above-Average Season With more than 6.6 million acres in the U.S. engulfed by wildfires so far this year, the active fire season continues without much relief for western states plagued by warm and dry weather that has driven explosive fire growth in recent weeks. According to the National Interagency Fire Center, the U.S. is 116% above the 10-year average for 2022. Numerous wildfires across Washington and Oregon are blanketing the region in smoke and unhealthy air conditions. Burning about 37 miles east of Seattle, the Bolt Creek Fire is threatening hundreds of homes and has burned 9,440 acres. According to the Washington State Department of National Resources, firefighters have 2% of the blaze contained. The mounting garbage is prompting health, safety and environmental concerns for customers and staff, according to the county. Waste facilities are experiencing trouble finding enough freight containers to transport garbage to regional waste facilities. The issue is also impacting other solid waste facilities throughout the Puget Sound area and into western Canada. If the county continues to experience challenges transporting the waste in the coming weeks, some solid waste facilities may have to close temporarily until the excess refuse can be dealt with. Job growth was highest in the following industries: government, education & health services, professional & business services and retail trade. The July 2022 preliminary estimated gain of 6,600 jobs was revised to a gain of 10,200 jobs. The seasonally adjusted monthly unemployment rate for July was confirmed at 3.7% and remained constant in August.
