RE: Approval to Submit a Community Wildfire Defense Grant for$175,000:
Washington State Department of Natural Resources
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
Jefferson County is one of the few counties in Washington State without a community wildfire
protection plan CWPP).
ANALYSIS:
Staff is undertaking an effort to develop a CWPP for Jefferson County. Fund 147 has close to
$200,000 in Title III funds which can be used to cover the cost of completing a CWPP. The
Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR)has Community Wildfire Defense
Grant funding available to help counties such as ours develop these plans for their communities.
Michael Mark, our Grants Administrator, has developed a competitive grant application with the
help of DNR staff for$175,000. Staff is requesting Board approval to submit the grant. There is
a small match requirement that can be easily met using general fund dollars. Fund 147 funds can
cover any cost the grant and match can't cover.
FISCAL IMPACT:
A Request for Proposals to secure a qualified consultant to help develop our plan has been
issued. We do not know what the plan development effort will cost. We believe it will cost at
least$175,000.
RECOMMENDATION:
That the Board of County Commissioners approve the submission of a Community Wildfire
Defense Grant application to DNR.
