Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. ________________________________ September 26, 2022 Dear Commissioners Brotherton, Eisenhour, and Dean: We commend you for your efforts to protect Jefferson County’s legacy growth forests, many of which were last logged prior to World War II and the start of industrial clear-cutting. We noticed that your support for their protection hasn't gone unnoticed by the forest products industry, which recently mailed postcards to county residents, asking them to oppose your efforts. The mailing came from a well-funded lobbying organization called Healthy Forests, Healthy Communities that has no paid staff, and identifies in its public records just one person as a principal--and that person is also the executive director of a Portland-based group called the American Forest Resource Council, a trade association whose members include the Port of Port Angeles (a major log exporter), Hermann Brothers Logging, and the wood products company Interfor. Please don't let oodles of cash and slick mailers drown out the voice of residents who overwhelmingly support the preservation of legacy forests as one of the most important actions Jefferson County can take to address climate warming and it’s harmful effects on salmon, tidelands, and people. We look forward to supporting your continued efforts to help Jefferson County become a leader for smart forestry practices that represent a win-win-win for climate, workers and our county. Sincerely, Darlene Schanfald Chair, North Olympic Sierra Club
