More and more people are discovering the mental and physical benefits our great outdoors provide, especially during challenging times. As our population grows, as more people get outside, we need to provide more opportunities for communities to access safe and welcoming outdoor areas. We need more trails, more parks, more picnic tables, more water access, and, quite frankly, more toilets! But we also need to recognize the impacts that recreation has on our non-human neighbors. We need to protect and restore lands for the plants and animals who share these wild places with us. They must flourish, even as our populations grow, so our ecosystems remain healthy and vibrant. That's why we're asking the Governor and Legislature to fully fund the Washington Wildlife & Recreation Program <https://wildliferecreation.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21 &id=4b27a88b0a&e=8c3506b728> —something we've never done before! The WWRP (part of the state capital budget) funds outdoor projects all across the state, from urban parks to habitat restoration, from mountain trails to working farms. Sign on today! <https://wildliferecreation.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21&id=01b92761e8&e=8c3506b728> <https://mcusercontent.com/0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21/images/487aa15b-4f45-b36c-cdb4-70e1d9ca3a66.png> Call for Policy Support Requests Believe it or not, 2023 is fast approaching and our team is hard at work developing our policy agenda for the upcoming Legislative Session. We ate, drank, caught up with old friends, and made some new ones. We raised $190,253 to continue our work at the highest level possible. We also talked about how we can give back to nature as Washington grows and how everyone has a role to play. A huge thanks to Olgy Diaz, Lylianna Allala, and Kate Dean for lending their insights and sharing their experiences. We couldn’t have asked for a better time! <https://wildliferecreation.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21&id=11f680b43c&e=8c3506b728> Read more <https://wildliferecreation. us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21&id=5849b6c5b7&e=8c3506b728> <https://mcusercontent.com/0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21/images/1fd6a0aa-6231-88a7-6995-85d00475fe8e.png> WWRC Supports Local Ballot Measures * King County Prop 1, Conservation Futures Increase <https://wildliferecreation.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21&id=3b53ab355b&e=8c3506b728> * By restoring the Local Conservation Futures program to its original rate, King County can protect mature forests, improve habitat for native salmon, strengthen our local food economy, provide more recreational opportunities, and ensure more equitable access to the outdoors. * Metro Parks Tacoma Levy <https://wildliferecreation.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21&id=faac4c8b97&e=8c3506b728> * Restoring the regular levy rate would provide funding to address the Park District’s existing and increasing maintenance, operations, and security costs. It is important to note the bulk of the operating budget is dedicated to labor costs – hiring, training, and compensating staff who operate and maintain the growing Metro Parks system. Outside of these areas? Don't forget to check your ballot for local measures supporting parks and conservation in your area! <https://mcusercontent.com/0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21/images/67a068c7-d958-439d-5785-30c8cc6e09e4.png> 12 Months of the WWRP: Urban Wildlife Habitat This month's featured project is Antoine Peak Etter Ranch <https://wildliferecreation.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21&id=4b53efb210&e=8c3506b728> . The Spokane County Parks, Recreation and Golf Department used this grant to buy 231 acres to expand the Antoine Peak Conservation Area <https://wildliferecreation.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0f4ebc0827fad a7e62b54ea21&id=3590f19cb0&e=8c3506b728> located on the ancestral land of the Ktunaxa ɁamakɁis and Spokane people. The conservation area preserves critical winter habitat for white-tailed deer, elk, moose, and other animals. The project also extends the conservation area to the City of Spokane Valley’s doorstep and preserves nearly 1 mile of streambank habitat. The site provides an outdoor classroom for nearby schools and a location for trailhead parking and trails. Today, these species—and the indigenous communities that depend on them—are at risk from ocean acidification. Olympic coast tribes, federal and academic scientists, and marine resource managers are working together to understand and plan for the impacts of ocean change to tribal community well-being. This collaborative investigation and project video were funded by the NOAA Ocean Acidification Program; project partners include the Hoh Tribe, Quileute Tribe, Quinault Indian Nation, Makah Tribe, Northwest Indian Fisheries Commission, Olympic Coast National Marine Sanctuary, Olympic National Park, NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Lab, UW Applied Physics Lab, UW CICOES (formerly ‘JISAO’), and the University of Connecticut.
