AS THE MOVE BEGINS! A major milestone is upon us! Coinciding with the station’s week-long fundraiser, five keynote KPTZ DJ hosts will broadcast live from our new broadcast studio this coming week! Tue 10/4 RHYTHM CONNECTION Robert Ambrose 1-3pm Tue 10/4 OUT OF NOWHERE Peter Robinson 3-5pm Wed 10/5 BRING YOUR RECORDS Larry Stein 9:30-11am Thu 10/6 DISCOVERY ROAD Tim Quackenbush 9:30-11am Fri 10/7 THE BUZZY DONAHUE SHOW 8-11am The 7-day event signifies a huge benchmark, now that KPTZ’s engineers have installed the needed infrastructure to enable these broadcasts. As they showcase our long-awaited migration from the tiny Mountain View Commons building to newly renovated Building 305 at Fort Worden, we turn now to you who listen, asking you to support and sustain KPTZ’s continued home grown radio as a fixture that serves this community. It already takes a lot of energy, and all the needed resources to maintain our equipment, operating from the small space that has allowed us to develop and create our locally-based programming lineup. Moving to the Fort will enable us to add responsibilities to become even more reliably functional ~ this can happen only with enough funding to support this dedicated offering. A year ago we held our previous week long fundraiser, as our all-volunteer crew began building out the newly renovated 2200-square foot station. All along, KPTZ’s dedicated, creative volunteer workforce, who as a group effort bring the 91.9FM airwaves to life, has continued also to serve the community. The buildout together with continuing on the air and streaming 24-7 has stretched us all to full tilt capacity ~ especially since the pandemic, when we came up with workarounds so that many of our creative crew could work from home. Even now, the station remains closed to the public due to high COVID transmission rates. Meanwhile we advance and continue to grow, serve and entertain! This station is resilient and we are so ready to move to the next level, but we need your support to help take us there! As the Drive commences, generous station donors have combined to establish a matching 1:1 fund, so that every dollar contributed will be doubled. Please listen over the week ahead, and contribute what you can towards our $60,000 goal to meet budgeted operating expenses. We very much appreciate you, your listenership and your support! Maryanne interviews Carol Hasse, PT Port Commissioner. Carol sailed into Point Hudson in the early 1970s with her commune on the boat they built. She was immediately smitten with the town and rather quickly moved here. She had grown up in a small town on the Columbia River. One year of college was enough to convince her that activism on global issues was her path. By the time she hit PT, she had traveled extensively — hitchhiking through 23 countries. Sailing was her passion, so she worked as crew on global adventures. Once here, Carol soon opened Hasse & Co, a sail loft in Point Hudson. She was one of the early forces behind the creation of both the Wooden Boat Festival and the Maritime Center. Over the years she has served on the board of both organizations. She sold her business to the Shipwright’s Coop in 2021. She’s now channeling her incredible energy into her position as Commissioner for the Port of PT. She wants to preserve our working waterfront and is determined to make it happen. BOOKLOVERS’ CAFÉ hosted by Cris Wilson Alternate Tuesdays and repeats the following Sunday, both 12:30-1pm October 11 / 16 Cris interviews author Jasmin Faulk Dickerson about her memoir The Last Sandstorm. Jasmin is a writer, speaker, and cultural identity advocate. She draws motivation from her personal story to educate and promote social justice and understanding. Born in the Middle East to an Italian mother and Arabian father, she immigrated to the United States in 1999 and pursued her education in Wyoming and Washington State in writing, equity, diversity, and leadership. In this memoir, Jasmin highlights the colorful and challenging experiences of her upbringing in Saudi Arabia, which led to her harrowing escape in her 20s. It is a family story, a romance and a thriller — a modern teenager in the repressive culture of Saudi Arabia. RHYTHM CONNECTION with host Robert Ambrose Tuesday 1-3pm Rhythm Connection transports listeners to cultures around the world, through incredibly diverse music from the African diaspora. Since its 1993 inception in Alaska, Robert has presented fresh music every week to make you dance or bring you solace, or both. DEEPER BLUES hosted by Chicago Bob Longmire Tuesday 7-8pm Deeper Blues is a time set aside for an in-depth focus on various aspects of blues culture: performers, styles, social issues and more, with about 2/3 music and 1/3 stories of background and context. Every week we focus on a different performer or topic for an hour to enjoy learning more of this uniquely American culture. In the next few weeks we’ll go “rolling up the river” toward Chicago, starting in the south with some blue gumbo. October 4 Blues from the Delta: Between the Mississippi and Yazoo Rivers, blues music exploded in the 1920s and 30s and it still thrives today. We got stories and tunes from the past and present. October 11 Hill Country Blues: Just east of that delta is a different terrain and a different style of music. The “other part” of North Mississippi is home to the hypnotic drone from the hill country. JAZZ NOTES hosted by Bill Mercier Tuesday 8-10pm <https://mcusercontent.com/6df05bfd2eaa0ab6bf92aa5cf/images/cf7ebf3f-5097-4655-756c-f0a4cac25976.jpg> October 4 It’s our “Welcome Home” fund drive show, and to celebrate we’ve got lots of great extended play numbers lined up to remind you just how unique the music is that we bring you on KPTZ. You’ll be hearing great longer pieces from people like Teddy Charles, Anorar Brahem, James Emery, Yotam Silberstein, Herbie Hancock, and a 20-plus-minute cut from Miles Davis off the Complete Jack Johnson Sessions recordings. We’re betting you’ll appreciate hearing more music rather than more talk during our fund drive week and that you’ll show your appreciation with your financial support. We also have a really nice “What’s New?” segment this week with three cuts from the great new album Playground from the exciting French vocalist Camille Bertault. October 11 This week we’ll hear from jazz greats like Oscar Peterson, Ernestine Anderson, and Sonny Rollins as well as lesser known artists like Wilton “Bogey” Gaynair, Rex Stewart and a Port Townsend favorite, Mark Lewis.
