I. Background The University's COPHP Community Development(HSERV 531) is a five-week course for first-year students that introduces them to community health, community development, community organizing, and assessment approaches. Community development is a process where community members take collective action to generate solutions to common problems, enhance community wellbeing, and promote equity and social justice. ] This course is unique because a large portion of it provides students with an opportunity to learn about community development by working on a real-world,public health problem in a rural community. Students work in collaboration with local partners and may require data gathering in the community. Prior to engaging in fieldwork, students will research learning objectives regarding rural health, best practices for engaging with a community health issue, and key principles for conducting a community health project to understand how to best assess community needs. II. Purpose The purpose of this student-centered community health project is to expose adult learners to public health practice in rural settings. The topic and goals of this project will be defined by Jefferson County Public Health—Community Health Division. The timeline of this project will be set by the instructor of this course,Francesca Collins. The scope of work and deliverables will be negotiated and agreed upon by JCPH and COPHP.
