October 21, 2022 <https://gallery.mailchimp.com/6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a/images/cf04e6fd-150d-4420-a926-ee7a36f2d944.png> FEDERAL NEWS Changing Times Lead to Challenging Days for Elections Workers County elections workers have withstood heightened scrutiny, criticism, and attacks over the last two years. In some counties, that's led to increased turnover and concerns for some officials' safety. A survey by the Brennan Center for Justice found that 77% of election officials believe threats against them have increased in recent years, with one in six reporting having been threatened because of their jobs, mostly over the phone, though half of those did not report the threats to law enforcement. One in five election officials reported that they were somewhat unlikely to stay in their jobs through the 2024 election, though more than half of all respondents were at least somewhat concerned that their successors might believe that widespread fraud occurred in the 2020 election. Learn More <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=3db5ac4fb3&e=30e2d4045f> COUNTY NEWS County Council Approves $3.5 Million Commitment to Affordable Housing Marking the latest milestone for the four-year-old Home Fund — San Juan County’s voter-approved, real estate excise tax-funded, affordable housing treasure chest — the County Council met October 11th to unanimously approve a $3.5 million new-money commitment for the coming fiscal year. The money becomes the Home Fund’s share of three priority projects — OPAL’s Kidder Lane project on Orcas, Lopez Village North, and Fisherman Bay Curve on Lopez — which together will total $20 million in construction costs. The balance of the funding will come from loans, state Housing Trust Fund grants, and a bevy of generous private donors. This process, known as the Broadband Data Collection (BDC) process, will be instrumental in the distribution of more than $40 billion in federal broadband grants to states later this year and into 2023. Local governments are being called upon to engage in the Federal Communication Commission’s Broadband Data Collection (BDC) process, which is the ongoing effort to publish a new national map of broadband availability across the country that will provide both fixed service and mobile service data. Internet service providers and governmental entities play several roles in the Broadband Data Collection process, including submitting availability data (to the extent that they are direct providers of broadband services) and being permitted to review and challenge both location-based data and availability data contained within the maps.
