Nearly all people detained in county jails – 658,000 – are eligible to vote, but many don’t because of obstacles with registration deadlines, voting processes, lack of access to educational resources and confusion about eligibility. These challenges are exacerbated for people with felony convictions who lose their right to vote at least while incarcerated and potentially indefinitely, except in Maine, Vermont and the District of Columbia. On Monday morning, the county-wide safety burn ban for unincorporated Pierce County was lifted. County officials said lifting the ban does not affect those areas in Pierce County where burning is prohibited because of environmental or pollution laws, or in areas where the local fire district limits or prohibits burning. Burning in those areas is still not allowed. Jonathan recently sent personalized survey requests to county BH officials and county commissioners in those counties that have adopted the tax. Additional information about the survey is included below. If you did not receive a survey invitation, but would like to receive one, please contact Jonathan <mailto:jonathan.purtle@nyu.edu> . With funding from the National Institute of Mental Health (grant #R21MH125261), Professor Purtle is conducting a survey of local officials’ experiences implementing earmarked taxes for behavioral health (i.e., mental health/substance use) services, decision-making processes related to tax-funded programs and services, and perceptions of the acceptability and feasibility of different types of implementation strategies. In short, the survey seeks to understand how the implementation of earmarked taxes for BH has been going so that the researchers can support strategies to improve tax implementation, evaluation, and design. The survey takes approximately 15 minutes to complete. WSAC would like to assure you that the survey is legitimate and encourage your participation. The results of this survey will be shared with WSAC once complete. Because the survey is about perceptions and collects subjective information, Professor Purtle is looking for multiple respondents from each county to maximize diverse perspectives across the state. However, following the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam in the 1940s, Grant County received access to irrigation water, spurring the development of many flourishing farms and shifting the county’s economy towards agriculture. With easily accessible water, relatively inexpensive land, and cheap electricity from the county’s dams, Grant County has become an attractive place for farmers and businesses alike, growing rapidly in the last 50 years.
