He also currently sits on the Vamos Outdoors Project <https://wildliferecreation.us9.list-manage.com/t rack/click?u=0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21&id=222a464fbe&e=8c3506b728> board and is the Volunteer Director of Community Engagement for Climbers of Color <https://wildliferecreation.us9.list-manage.com/t rack/click?u=0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21&id=e9a662cd6f&e=8c3506b728> . Andres is a first generation Mexican American born in Bellevue, WA and grew up in Issaquah and Sammamish. Andres has always been fond of being outside and as cliché as he says it is to be from WA and have the favorite color green and love fall, he embraces it — just like he embraces a pumpkin spice latte. I was able to sit down with Andres during our team retreat a few weeks ago at the Rendezvous Huts, just outside of downtown Winthrop, WA and it was apparent that Andres has a deep passion for rock-climbing, equity, providing access and support to those underrepresented, and community. Whether you need a comprehensive plan, a feasibility study, or construction-ready documents, this program will help communities move closer to their recreation goals. Most importantly, with this grant RCO is prioritizing diverse urban neighborhoods, small rural communities, and those that are less experienced with our grant process. Applications are due November 14, 2022. More and more people are discovering the mental and physical benefits our great outdoors provide, especially during challenging times. As our population grows, as more people get outside, we need to provide more opportunities for communities to access safe and welcoming outdoor areas. We need more trails, more parks, more picnic tables, more water access, and, quite frankly, more toilets! But we also need to recognize the impacts that recreation has on our non-human neighbors. We need to protect and restore lands for the plants and animals who share these wild places with us. They must flourish, even as our populations grow, so our ecosystems remain healthy and vibrant. That's why we're asking the Governor and Legislature to fully fund the Washington Wildlife & Recreation Program <https://wildliferecreation.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21 &id=3611dacbc9&e=8c3506b728> —something we've never done before! The WWRP (part of the state capital budget) funds outdoor projects all across the state, from urban parks to habitat restoration, from mountain trails to working farms. It is important to note the bulk of the operating budget is dedicated to labor costs – hiring, training, and compensating staff who operate and maintain the growing Metro Parks system. Outside of these areas? Don't forget to check your ballot for local measures supporting parks and conservation in your area! <https://mcusercontent.com/0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21/images/3e96af9a-f411-a99f-62fd-2e3a7215c746.png> 12 Months of the WWRP: State Lands Restoration & Enhancement This month's featured project is phase two of restoration at Damon Point <https://wildliferecreation.us9.list-manage.com/track/click?u=0f4ebc0827fada7e62b54ea21&id=d995dc43b5&e=8c3506b728> , a sand spit peninsula located on the ancestral lands of the Sq’ʷayáiɬaqtmš (Chehalis) in Grays Harbor. This project will treat 90 acres of estuary habitat for invasive species, and conduct plantings on 3 acres to reestablish coastal grassland and forb meadows. In addition, specific, dedicated trails that avoid key habitats will be designated and signed for public access, with educational information to prevent intrusion into sensitive areas. The Puyallup Tribe signed the medicine creek treaty in 1854 and like every other tribe in North America, they have had to continually fight for the inherent ways of life that are supposed to be guaranteed and protected by their treaty.
