Email your public comment BEFORE Monday @ 4pm to: publiccomment@cityofpt.us <mailto:publiccomment@cityofpt.us> ---- Will it include protections for affordable housing for local workers? As a community, we need to ensure it does. Please help voice your concerns, share your stories, and let our City Council know we expect a specific strategy that ensures increased housing that meets the needs of working people in our community. What are we asking for? Housing Solutions Network is supportive of the City of Port Townsend taking measures to reduce barriers to building housing and allowing housing infill in our community- AS LONG AS THEY CAN ENSURE AFFORDABILITY for the people who want to work and live here. What would this look like? A specific commitment to increase and protect housing for the local workforce, especially those who make over the threshold to qualify for low-income housing resources and yet not enough to purchase market rate housing. Examples could include: Identify incentives for developers to prioritize mixed affordability in all new developments, and expanding the range beyond 80% AMI to meet the needs of the community, Supporting the implementation of permanent affordability models like community land trusts, and Further researching workforce housing deed restrictions as successfully modeled in communities like Breckenridge, CO. To learn more about our concerns, please read this op-ed: Housing for Whom? Why PT needs to get 'density' right <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=a65310b007&e=cbc38cef46> ! found in the PT Leader's issue this past Wednesday, November 2nd, written and endorsed by HSN volunteers, staff, and community members. You can see the City's plan by going to the agenda at: https://cityofpt.us/citycouncil/page/agendasminutesvideos <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=f496081f03&e=cbc38cef46> , select the AGENDA for the November 7th meeting. This plan will lead to more density and more housing in PT...both great things! However, the plan does not include a specific commitment to creating and protecting workforce housing, with a focus on 80-150% AMI. Without specific protections and guidelines for affordability, we are at risk of having all new housing being sold at market rate <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u= 38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=84d5c7e8ba&e=cbc38cef46> to retirees, second homes, remote workers and cash offers, which does not meet the current needs of our community. The market rate average for a home in PT is now over $700,000 <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=37ef2a750a&e=cbc38cef46> . The average worker in Jefferson County can afford to pay only up to $300,000 for a house. Market rate housing will not keep our workforce here. It will not meet our community's needs. Let's help the City make the best decision in this pivotal moment. We, the residents, workers, employers, housing advocates, and local workforce need to voice our concerns and ask City leaders to develop specific strategies for ensuring local workers have access to affordable housing. Please join Housing Solutions Network and other housing advocates share our concerns and ensure that the City of Port Townsend makes affordable housing a priority for the 2023 Workplan and beyond. HSN is committed to collaborating with the City to ensure affordable housing for the local workforce. Questions? Comments? Concerns?
