Good afternoon Commissioners,
My name is Birdie Kressler- I am a mental health professional working to build an interdisciplinary psychosocial program here at Jefferson Healthcare in the Oncology Clinic.
Some of my hours are spent providing direct care to patients and their families. I reach out to you today as an advocate with a plea for any support in navigating a complicated situation
which deeply impacts the overall wellbeing and sustainability of quality of health for one of our patients and his family.
Currently I am working to support a husband who is the primary caretaker for his wife. Both have cancer and Parkinson's. Currently, the well on their property on Marrowstone Island is
out of commission and they have been informed that no one will drill a new well until September 2023. The husband is a Coast Guard Veteran in good standing, who is driving his wife
and himself multiple times a week for cancer care to our hospital. Their lives are heavily burdened by cancer.
I spoke with a manager at Jefferson PUD who told me the cost to put the family on the city water line would be over $8,000. Currently this family is running a garden hose from across
the street from their neighbor's home through their kitchen window. Soon, the hose will freeze. No one should be drinking from a garden hose, let alone those of older age with a cancer
diagnosis.
I have reached out to some smaller organizations to seek help with any amount of funding that can be provided to help avail or offset some of the cost for this vital resource.
I turn to you seeking suggestions or insights I may be missing.
Thank you so much in advance for your time and consideration of this serious and tender matter.
Kindly,
Birdie (Kayla) Kressler, MA, MHP
