WHEREAS, in 1990 Richard Wojt became an elected Jefferson County Commissioner and went on to
serve for 12 years. A strong environmentalist, his proudest accomplishments were putting in place Jefferson
County's first comprehensive plan and helping to start the Larry Scott Trail. After retiring in 2002, he served
on many boards and committees including the North Olympic Salmon Coalition, Jefferson County Historical
Society, and Sunrise Rotary; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wcjt was a determined individual who never let the nay -sayers hold him back.
Undiagnosed dyslexia made school a challenge, but he ignored advice to lower his ambitions and went to
college anyway. He earned degrees in chemistry and education from Western Washington University; and
WHEREAS, Mr. Wojt's career involved teaching at Fort Worden's Juvenile Diagnostic and Treatment
Center. He also taught science at Chimacum High School for 25 years. He loved working with kids and taking
them hiking in the Olympic Mountains. He mentored students and stayed in touch with some of them
throughout his life including current Commissioner Heidi Eisenhour; and
WHEREAS, a deep love of nature, dedication to community, and a desire to do good in this world
were the threads that ran through the life of former Jefferson County Commissioner Richard Wojt; and
WHEREAS, a memorial service will be held on December 3, 2022 at 2:00 p.m. at the Quimper
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Masks and COVID-19 proof of vaccination are required to attend. In lieu
of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Jefferson Healthcare Hospice;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED THAT the Jefferson County Board of County
Commissioners, do hereby proclaim November 7 — 13, 2022 as
OBSERVANCE OF RICHARD WGJT
in Jefferson County and that the courthouse flag be lowered to half-staff in observance of
Richard Wojt, and encourage Jefferson County residents to join the Commissioners in honoring his memory
and achievements.

STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
In observance of the former Commissioner Richard Wojt, request to approve a proclamation and lower
the courthouse flag to half-staff
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no fiscal impact to Jefferson County.
RECOMMENDATION:
Approve Proclamation re: Proclaiming November 7-13, 2022, Observance of Richard Wojt and lower the
courthouse flag to half-staff.
