After 12 years in tenure, every lease authorizing commercial net pen aquaculture in Washington state has expired. For years, we've emphasized how the expiration of these long-lasting and legally binding leases offers Washington state an urgent and unprecedented opportunity to take back our sound from this dangerous and antiquated industry. Now, we're thrilled to share that the time has finally come. In just days, Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz will finally announce a major decision over whether she will issue new leases to Cooke Aquaculture to continue polluting and degrading our public waters over the next decade or if she will listen to calls from the public to take bold action to restore Puget Sound for the benefit and use of all. As we wait to hear what Commissioner Franz will decide, we couldn't be more optimistic for the future. <https://default.salsalabs.org/425a9d2d-3705-4070-921e-ef765b467421/2b642872-a321-4a76-82cb-251cb4f5b0fa.png> For one, Commissioner Franz has a strong record when it comes to holding the net pen industry accountable, from finding Cooke at fault for the catastrophic Cypress Island net pen collapse to refusing to back down or compromise the public's natural resources when defending Washington from four years of Cooke's meritless lawsuits. More importantly, we're optimistic because Commissioner Franz is required by statute to make a decision that is in the best interest of the public. Since we launched the Our Sound, Our Salmon campaign <https://default.salsalabs.org/T398f0170-1843-444b-9658-082992e20fed/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> five years ago, the public has made abundantly clear through countless actions that the health of Puget Sound represents an irreplaceable public heritage and a finite resource of great social, cultural, and economic value that they are not willing to risk at hands of this dangerous industry. <https://default.salsalabs.org/425a9d2d-3705-4070-921e-ef765b467421/ce4baa87-ad91-47e7-a803-a146e69325bb.jpg> Governor Jay Inslee signs into law the public's hard-fought bill banning nonnative finfish aquaculture in 2018 surrounded by members of Wild Fish Conservancy and representatives of the Our Sound, Our Salmon coalition. Looking back, it's incredible how many milestones and accomplishments we've celebrated together toward this end. Even more incredible, is the amount and diversity of people throughout the northwest who unified their voices to call for action from state officials to protect wild fish, orcas, tribal treaty rights, and the greater health of Puget Sound from this polluting and dangerous industry. Together, we successfully called on the legislature to pass the world's largest legislative ban on nonnative Atlantic salmon net pen aquaculture. When Cooke attempted to circumvent and undermine that law a year later by switching from Atlantic salmon to native species, the public came together again to demand comprehensive environmental review of Cooke's risky new proposal. Your ongoing support also made it possible for WFC to hold Cooke accountable for $2.75 million in Clean Water Act violations that turned fish farm profits into orca recovery dollars <https://default.salsalabs.org/T55344707-0e11-4deb-b289-8d770cc1460c/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> through the Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment. Your advocacy prevented Cooke from continuing to amplify and spread an exotic, nonnative virus in their Puget Sound net pens, and you supported actions to stand in solidarity with First Nations in British Columbia that bolstered their calls for a coastwide end to commercial net pen aquaculture. <https://default.salsalabs.org/425a9d2d-3705-4070-921e-ef765b467421/7feebb97-8a4b-4738-844b-d931b85e28d5.jpg> WFC representing the Our Sound, Our Salmon coalition at a protest led by B.C. Now, as we wait for Commissioner Franz's decision, is heartwarming to recall and celebrate all we have accomplished together over the past five years. Collectively, these efforts bring us confidence and hope that we've never been closer to achieving a healthier Puget Sound. <https://default.salsalabs.org/425a9d2d-3705-4070-921e-ef765b467421/a96026a1-44b7-465e-b012-a1b867ec9410.jpg> <https://default.salsalabs.org/425a9d2d-3705-4070-921e-ef765b467421/fdba7915-0096-40f2-8771-d10b299db73c.jpg> Working Together to Protect Puget Sound For over two decades, Wild Fish Conservancy has been watchdogging the industry, advancing our region's scientific understanding of the risks net pens pose, and working with colleagues around the world to bring an end to this practice in public waters. Your support makes it possible for us to stand up and react quickly to the commercial net pen aquaculture industry as we work to end this practice in Puget Sound and protect our public waters for benefit of all. <https://default.salsalabs.org/T94a9ec3c-2b44-447d-adb9-13d6e572d5ef/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> Share this Update <https://www.facebook.com/sharer.php?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwildfishconservancy.salsalabs.org%2Fcomm-franzs-big-decision> <https://twitter.com/intent/tweet?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwildfishconservancy.salsalab s.org%2Fcomm-franzs-big-decision> <https://www.pinterest.com/pin/find/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fwildfishconservancy.salsalabs.org%2Fcomm-franzs-big-decision> <https://www.linkedin.com/shareArticle?url =https%3A%2F%2Fwildfishconservancy.salsalabs.org%2Fcomm-franzs-big-decision> <https://www.tumblr.com/widgets/share/tool?canonicalUrl=https%3A%2F%2Fwildfishconservancy.salsalabs.org%2Fcomm-franzs-b ig-decision> <mailto:?&body=https%3A%2F%2Fwildfishconservancy.salsalabs.org%2Fcomm-franzs-big-decision> Wild Fish Conservancy PO Box 402 | Duvall, Washington 98019 425.788.1167 | info@wildfishconservancy.org Follow Us <https://www.facebook.com/wildfishconservancy> <https://twitter.com/intent/follow?screen_name=wildfishNW> <https://www.instagram.com/wildfishconservancy/> <https://www.youtube.com/user/wild fishconservancy?sub_confirmation=1> <https://www.linkedin.com/company/wild-fish-conservancy/about/> Having trouble viewing this email?
