Margie is a long-time volunteer who was on the team that worked on the Wild and Scenic River bill for Washington State. Come find out about the many environmental conservation issues facing Washington and how you can volunteer to make a difference. RSVP HERE <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=2023f0611299479ee0a6feb2000411eecee0dd6b1bb41d1cbfd88964f66eed44af523eb5c42480adf343b197bfa039e988fd8f72a98d7f5b> Election Results--Great News! The composition of next year's state legislature will have a stronger pro-environment contingent. Locally, Sierra Club endorsed environmental champions, Mike Chapman and Steve Tharinger, won re-election and Senator Patty Murray, a long-time champion of expanding Olympic wilderness, was easily returned to the U.S. Congress. Sierra Club is gearing up for the upcoming legislative session in Olympia and needs volunteers to help lobby for--among other things-- removing the Snake River Dams, increased funds for DNR land transfers, and incentives for desperately needed affordable and environmentally-sound housing options. Volunteer Here <mailto:barbaraeboyle@gmail.com?subject=> ________________________________ North Olympic Group Needs You! Every year at this time we solicit applications from our members to serve on our Executive Committee. We meet once a month, via Zoom, to address some of the most pressing environmental issues facing Clallam and Jefferson Counties. Throw your hat in the ring--drop us a note telling us about yourself, your environmental interests and background, and any experience you feel is relevant to serving on our board. Self-nominations are due by the end of this month; we'll contact you before our December newsletter which will contain a list of candidates. Terms begin in January. Submit Applications Here <mailto:peter.guerrero@washington.sierraclub.org?subject=> ________________________________ <https://image.emails.sierraclub.org/lib/fe94137277610c7d76/m/3/9bfabbf9-4241-46d7-a821-30559d09466b.jpeg> The Future of DNR Lands in Jefferson County--Clearcuts or Carbon Sequestration? Your Support is Needed The Peninsula Daily News reports that: "a Jefferson County Superior Court judge has ruled against the state Department of Natural Resources in a case plaintiffs say will have broad implications for how the agency manages its forests. Superior Court Judge Keith Harper ruled Wednesday in favor of plaintiffs...who argued the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) had violated the state Environmental Policy Act by failing to consider the impacts of climate change from two timber sales in the county." It's worth noting that clearcuts are the current number one source of carbon emissions in the county. Meanwhile, the Jefferson County Commissioners will be holding a public meeting on Wednesday, November 30, at 5PM to discuss management options for the county's forests in light of DNR's plans to designate certain state trust lands as carbon reserves. The meeting will be at the Jefferson County Library, 620 Cedar Ave., Port Hadlock. In June, commissioners sent a letter to DNR asking that Jefferson County be included in the counties being considered for the program but heavy lobbying by timber interests could cause the County to backtrack. A strong public showing is needed to support saving our legacy forests. ________________________________ Dungeness River Off-Channel Reservoir Public Open House Since 2017, members of the Sierra Club’s North Olympic Group have been following the progress of a project that will build an off-channel reservoir. The project’s purpose is to store water in the winter and spring when water is plentiful. The stored water will be used for irrigation in late summer, when the river flow is low, instead of withdrawing water from the Dungeness River during critical fish spawning times. The 42-acre reservoir is planned to be located on land located between the Dungeness River and River Road in Sequim and will be located in a proposed 396-acre Clallam County park. At this writing, the property is still owned by the Washington Department of Resources (DNR) but negotiations are underway. Clallam County and the key stakeholders will be holding a public open house and briefing on December 6, 2022 from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM at the Dungeness River Nature Center located at the west end of Hendrickson Road. The public is welcome to attend. ________________________________ Let us know how if you have any suggestions or if you want to volunteer to help protect the Olympic Peninsula's environment.
