Non-cancerous cells around a tumor can help it avoid attacks by the immune system, resist therapies that target them, and allow it to spread to other parts of the body. Researchers are now finding that some of these helpful neighbors aren’t even human cells — they’re bacteria. The role that bacteria may play in promoting cancer is receiving more scientific attention. Two new studies from investigators at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center reveal how bacteria infiltrate tumors and how they could be helping tumors progress and spread. The team also showed that the different microbial players in a tumor’s microbiota (the full collection of microbes it carries) could influence how a cancer responds to treatment. Susan Bullman, PhD, and her collaborator, Fred Hutch molecular microbiologist Christopher D. Johnston, PhD, combined observations from tumors with lab-based experiments and small-molecule drug screens to show that Fusobacterium nucleatum may shape conditions in tumors to keep them safe from immune attack and help them spread through the body. One of the other surprising takeaways from the research <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=Ei60r9RATDXdl7RKk59snw1iI5CIN2twB0asK8hRZR56pmb6fvbs3A> : Good oral health could help to reduce cancer risk. ________________________________ Science Says: Collaborations That Inspire Us <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=k4JLkJkNW4FcaNbCrRmOPuSsL8Wy7vCPYGGGwJxgY0NY4ddWx8b5Vw> <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=gqzX3iJUlE_ckkVrfJHhLrjFOrMSNMKdtJwcrrRL8gjNSmfnal8waQ> Join us on Tuesday, November 29 at 10 a.m. PST <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=jsk1Ms_2zboWa1rzmdS0mBdu_mEoOhDOj9_IyowocBJoMepxM3DN0w> for an energetic and inspiring conversation, about the power of collaboration to accelerate research and discover new cures. You’ll hear from three duos who challenge, motivate and support each other in that pursuit. ________________________________ The Latest Researching herpes treatments with 'skin-on-chip' technology <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=_KUMWpR9ZWBSY9k_zjj7IDz7QVIVzah36kpv9BE_qWVnKTEaPDcV2Q> Immunologist and virologist Dr. Jia Zhu has built and tested a prototype “skin-on-chip” platform that could help researchers speed the development of a human herpes treatment. Stop smoking? For Indigenous people, it’s especially hard <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=6jqlg7JiUt8FfQeXJfDamZoQQ59y05U1cGm3J_IYNjqRHaerg8yu_g> Quitting tobacco is hard for anyone. But for many Indigenous people, tobacco is often part of everyday life, making it nearly impossible to escape. The story of one woman illustrates the challenge while Fred Hutch’s həliʔil Program offers support for patients and providers. Cancer chemo side effects and how to limit them <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=8fgHUrChlSh6HGu4UMYk-Q8hnCmWv7znk-P9LdBEVBM7A8DpR7EzxA> Fred Hutch physician-scientist Dr. Gary Lyman recently published a broad overview of common, acute chemotherapy-associated adverse events and how to manage them. Curious as to what you can expect should chemotherapy be in your future? Read a Q&A with Lyman. ________________________________ Good News Dr. Larry Corey receives Alexander Fleming Award <https://secure.fredhutch.org/site/R?i=4V8U0sYeokSFpR2YZ0WIK1uVnAtQiUKo6TpXhAlLg-vlYK0fN8oskg> The prestigious lifetime achievement award, given by the Infectious Diseases Society of America, was presented to renowned virologist and former president and director of Fred Hutch by his friend and longtime collaborator, Dr. Anthony Fauci.
