Today, Washington’s Commissioner of Public Lands Hilary Franz made history by announcing a bold new executive order that will prohibit commercial net pen aquaculture in Washington state marine waters. By denying new leases to Cooke and bringing forward this comprehensive, bold new policy to prevent commercial net pens from ever operating in Washington marine waters again, Commissioner Franz is ensuring Puget Sound will be protected, not just now, but far into the future for the benefit of generations to come. We are so grateful to Commissioner Franz and her team at the Department of Natural Resources for hearing the calls of the public and taking such bold action to protect wild salmon, orcas, and the health of our public waters. I truly have no words, except to say that this victory belongs to the public. Without your support and the actions of so many over so many years, today's massive environmental victory would never have been possible. Thank you, thank you, thank you a million times, thank you. If you missed our previous email earlier this week, I encourage you to read our latest Our Sound, Our Salmon news post <https://default.salsalabs.org/T408a27df-e1ab-4515-8e4a-923ea552bc85/e1f9ba72-dc 83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> to learn more about the implications of Washington's actions this week, from initiating the largest passive restoration project in Washington's history to uniting the entire US Pacific Coast in excluding this dangerous and antiquated industry from marine waters. The past 72-hours have truly been a whirlwind as we work to share all of this week's good news far and wide. It has been so rewarding to connect and celebrate with so many of you this week who worked so hard toward this end and we cannot wait to continue the celebrations far into the future. Earlier today, I was humbled and honored to participate and speak alongside Commissioner Franz and Suquamish Tribe Chairman Leonard Forsman at a historic press event on behalf of the tens of thousands of individuals and hundreds of businesses and organizations who came together so many times under the Our Sound, Our Salmon banner over the past five years. If you missed the event, we will be sure to share video coverage in the days to come. All week, we've heard from friends and colleagues all around the world in places like Canada, Chile, Tasmania, Scotland, and so many others working to protect their own public waters from the environmental harm caused by commercial net pen aquaculture. Washington's historic decision is setting a new standard that will serve as a model and rallying cry to bolster the efforts of communities and governments around the world working toward this same end. We stand committed to leveraging our massive success to support these global efforts, and we know you'll be right there by our side. We'll be sharing more in the days to come, but for now will leave you to take in this incredible moment in history. It is truly inspiring to see what is possible when the public unifies their voices and works together with the law and science on their side toward the shared goal of a healthier Puget Sound. We have so much to proud of and so much to celebrate in the days and weeks to come.
