The Wooden Boat Festival was back, and with increased attendance. SEVENTY48 and R2AK were back—and bigger. Our campus once again welcomed students from within our county AND beyond for in-person, on-the-water, hands-on learning. We never really went away—we were still doing things, albeit either virtually or on a limited basis. But there is something about gathering people (safely!) and experiencing the mission together, in solidarity, that gives me goosebumps and has me reaching for the Kleenex. This is the kind of work that energizes me, that energizes us all, that keeps us inspired to keep showing up, day after day after day. Today, our educational programs impact the lives of students in the counties of Jefferson, Clallam, Kitsap, King, Mason, Pierce, and Snohomish. They learn on land <https://nwmaritime.us17.list-manag e.com/track/click?u=cb069e2ef93881d477105d51f&id=447eae31b0&e=a442042d8d> and on the water, aboard our fleet of 48 boats (and counting!), including the newest member of our fleet, Admiral Jack, a 40’ power catamaran. Classroom learning can already be challenging for some students, and studies have shown the powerful, positive impact that blue spaces make not just on our ability to learn, but our emotional health. And our kids need that now more than ever. This year also marked the start of the second school year of Maritime High School, an effort to create access to maritime careers and open doors to college for students furthest from educational justice, resources, and opportunities in the Highline Public Schools and surrounding districts. We’ve been hard at work connecting the maritime industry to our students to help create pathways to those jobs and skills that support our state’s blue economy. This year’s SEVENTY48 and R2AK <https://nwmaritime.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=cb069e2ef93881d477105d51f&id=827d707c5d&e=a442042d8d> brought racers from as far as France, and knits a community of followers, fans, and volunteers that stretches from Tacoma, to Port Townsend, to Victoria, B.C., to Ketchikan, AK. One of the most powerful stories that speak to resilience and courage for me? Every single one of them. Whether they won the race or never quite got over the starting line, every single one of these journeys is about overcoming one’s self-doubt and pushing against boundaries. From our humble, saltwater hippie beginnings, the Northwest Maritime Center has grown five times in the last decade, serving the region through education, adventure, and community-building. As we work to build a courageous and resilient world, we also seek to create a more equitable one. And for us, that challenge is an existential one. Inflation is not just a headline in the business section of the news—it’s a challenge our own staff faces as housing and compensation challenge our ability to support the people who bring our mission to life. Without our people, we have no mission. The Maritime Center is working to find solutions not just for our staff, but as part of a community of nonprofits who face the same dilemma. We need our broad community of supporters to help us continue the work. We need you. Whether you’re a die-hard Wooden Boat Festival fan, a self-confessed R2AK fanatic, a cruiser, an educator… there is something in the maritime mission that has resonated for you. And as you think of how you can help create that courageous, resilient, and equitable world, I invite you to make a gift to the Northwest Maritime Center. Thank you for helping create powerful maritime experiences for all. Onward! Jake Beattie Executive Director P.S. If you’ve just made your year-end gift to us, THANK YOU! Our community is better for your generosity.
