Dear Commissioners,
I attended today's Forestry Workshop held in Port Hadlock by zoom. Thank
you for recognizing the role that Jefferson County can have in forest
conservation and restoration, especially of our diverse old growth
forests, and support for local working forests with local benefits.
Although there is opportunity working with DNR please be aware of the
history of forest degradation and loss, especially of old growth, partly
under their stewardship. Unfortunately much of the challenge to healthy
forest ecosystem conservation and management is with our dated state
prescribed economic dependence of local services like education and fire
departments on forest resources. I look forward to Jefferson County's
increased efforts in forest conservation and local scale working forests.
