Really appreciated the team’s great work and your careful approach. I wanted to be sure that you all saw this letter that went to WSAC this morning. They are trying to do this important election by Dec 30. We are asking for a little slower process so there can be a bit of public input too—at the local level. This I such an important seat on the BNR. Thanks! -Mary Jean Ryan From: maryjeanryan20@gmail.com <maryjeanryan20@gmail.com> Sent: Monday, December 5, 2022 9:54 AM To: ejohnson@wsac.org; pjewell@wsac.org Cc: 'David Perk' <davidperk@comcast.net> Subject: Local Input on County Representation on the BNR Dear Executive Director Johnson and Policy Director Jewell, Thank you for all the work you do on behalf of Washington counties. We are writing to you to request that WSAC slow down the process for the selection of the new member of the Board of Natural Resources to allow time for local engagement and input. Members of the Board of Natural Resources serve in a critical public policy leadership position, balancing the fiscal needs of state trust beneficiaries against the existential pressures of climate change on our state’s natural resources. Other important considerations include watershed impacts, the loss of biodiversity, the importance of the wood products industry and the needs in many communities for expanded recreational opportunities. Electing a new member of the Board deserves careful consideration and deliberation. Once the person is added to the Board they will likely serve for years. There needs to be enough time in the process for the public to give input to their respective County Commissioners and Councilmembers as they consider how to cast their county’s one vote. The Board of Natural Resources is considering a variety of important issues and, as you know, the counties themselves are not of one mind. The current moment calls for a County Representative who is familiar with the complexities of DNR’s trust mandate, who is skilled in building bridges between diverse perspectives, and who values independent science and authentic community engagement. As co-leads of the Washington State Lands Working Group, we welcome a dialogue with you at any time. We appreciate your consideration of our request for a selection process that allows the public to be involved.
