Not only does my family own a house on Griffith Point Road, we have many close friends who call Marrowstone home. As you are already aware, the quality and quantity of potable water has been declining steadily for quite some time. So many residents have an inadequate supply of water for even the most modest of lifestyles and are also experiencing salt intrusion in their present wells. This problem is only increasing as more residents move into the area and further stretch the already fragile water supply. Those against the proposal suggest that water cachement systems are a viable alternative. These costly water systems certainly can work. for some, however, they are expensive and demand a great deal of upkeep and expertise to ensure a healthy water supply. By design, these systems are open to the environment, exposing them to many airborne and fecal contaminants which can cause serious illness. As a physician, I routinely consider waterborne contaminants when diagnosing a patient with a significant gastrointestinal or constitutional complaints. The water proposal for Marrowstone, already approved by voters, generates a number of positive aspects for the island's residents and surrounding communities. First, it ensures a stable, healthy water supply for all properties, regardless of location. This will certainly improve the quality of life for countless residents. When my family built our home on the island, our water supply was small but stable. Since then, with the population growth, our wells are at risk of running dry during the summer months. This is a frustration shared by many of our neighbors. Secondly, it improves property value for everyone. These homes represent significant investments of time and resources; each deserves a stable water supply to ensure a stable and fair property value, not only now but in the years to come. Third, the design of the system will provide an excellent water source without a substantial impact on the environment. The depletion of a shrinking aquifer on the island will be halted and the significant environmental impact of repeated well-drilling will be avoided. The proposed system will have minimal environmental impact and, once in place, will provide a dependable water source without the need for extensive drilling or revision. Finally, it represents job opportunities for local residents. Not only will we be investing in our Marrowstone residents, we will be investing in our local economy through increased jobs. This can only help the local economy. Please continue to support the water proposal for Marrowstone. It provides many positive things for the community, both now and in the years to come. Si~AA Mark.
