Re: Land Use Application MLA05-0276 for Marrowstone Island Water System
Dear Sirs:
In a recent article in the Port Townsend Leader I note that a group of people from Port
Townsend are objecting to the construction of a water system for our island. I would ask
you to reject their appeal for the following reasons:
1. The appellants are apparently not even residents of Marrowstone Island and are
attempting to thwart construction of the system we approved.
2. The request for SEP A review has apparently been considered by the PUD and
found not necessary. Further delay will add to legal costs, will result in higher
bond rates in a rising market, and will delay construction until winter months.
3, Ms. Dorgan is quoted as saying that withdrawal of water from a PUD well will
"draw water from an already stretched aquifer". This is a specious argument because
we are not talking about one aquifer but several disconnected aquifers (see Water
Supply Bulletin 59 in this regard). Further, it has been established that well pumping
on Marrowstone Island is leading to salt water intrusion of the aquifers on the island.
Sincerely,
t"~~
