Rush [mailto:rgrush@olympus.net] Sent: Tuesday, July 05, 2005 2:51 PM To: Lorna Delaney Subject: WaterforMarrowstone Dear LOG ITEM # ('1 Page_Lof 7./ Dear David,Phil and Pat, Marrowstone Island desperately needs PUD water. Washington State and Jefferson County agencies all agree that for health and fire control purposes the Island must have public water. Only a small minority of residents are opposed; they sued and lost. Now some Port Towsend activists, with possible influence in Olympia, are fighting us tooth and nail to prevent the building of the approved water system. They claim that the PUD is not adequately addressing the environmental issues. They are wrong. The PUD is managed by a licensed civil engineer with extensive experience in water system design including environmental issues. The wife and I are in our 80s. We have lived on the Island for 30 years and for over 25 years I have been in the business of raising shellfish: oysters, clams and mussels, in Kilisut Harbor, for sale retail and wholesale (W A State Lie. 505). We have an unblemished record with the State. Shellfish require a very clean environment, the very best conditions including healthy sea water. A State agency each month routinely tests the water quality in Kilisut Harbor in and around each commercial shellfish operation. We are true Environmentalists - -we have to be. We are also water Conservationists. When we first moved here we drilled a well and found good water and an ample supply. We had no water problems for the first 15 years, but as more homes were built on the Island and wells drilled, we had to use more and more treatment. Four years ago we had to abandon the well because of salt water intrusion. We began using our son's well - - he has a summer home near by. However, due to the droughts of the last three years this well is nearly dry. The well is pumped into a 1000-gallon holding tank by a "smart pump", but even that does not provide a adequate supply for two adults. We now buy and haul PUD water to fill the tank every 8 or 10 days. We use about 100 gallons a day; we shower every third day, flush only when necessary and wash clothing in Port Hadlock with PUD water. We have a catchment 7/6/2005 WaterforMarrowstone e system for rain water that we use on our small garden. e Page 2 of 2 We strongly object to the pseudo-environmentalists like Port Townsend's Nancy Dorgan and Paula Mackrow trying to tell us that we should not have PUD water on the Island. If they want to be constructive and help the Island's environment, they should help us maintain our 1 in 5 acre Zoning already in place. If Port Townsend did not have public water, I'm sure these ladies would not be protesting Port Townsend building a water system to serve them. Sincerely, Ralph Rush 5003 Flagler Rd.
