Thank you for the opportunity to comment on the proposed Marrowstone Island water
pipeline. I am extremely concerned about this project.
I strongly recommend that this pipeline is NOT built.
I am thirty years old and came to live on Marrowstone Island 5 years ago. I was attracted
to this location due to its general isolation from the mainstream. I came here to be in
nature, to listen to the owls, and build a quality life with my family.
Now, I am afraid. the very nature of the island which brought most of us here is being
threatened by the proposed Marrowstone Island water system.
I am all for making quality of life improvements. However the proposed water system
does not qualify as an "improvement" by many islanders' standards! I see the potential
arrival of a pipeline as an invitation to developers and speculators to make a quick profit
at the expense of the natural integrity of the island.
In the coming years, in both my children's and grandchildren's lifetimes. the availability
of preserved "intact" land will be exponentially more valuable than any developed land.
This "value" I refer to is a quality of life value, an ecological value, and an economic
value.
Life and ecology aside, the physical land which makes up Marrowstone Island will be
more valuable down the road if the pipeline is NOT built and the natural landscape is
preserved.
I talk to a lot of people about this issue. So far I am in consensus with everyone I have
spoken with. This leads me to believe that the pro-pipeliners don't actually live on the
island full time, and their interests lie elsewhere or in short term financial profits.
Make the right choice. Do NOT build the pipeline.
Thank you,
