Subject: RE: Hearings - Major Resort Revision
Elizabeth, thank you for writing to me regarding the "hearings schedule for Port Ludlow Associates proposed
major revision to Port Ludlow Resort area". I appreciate this input and I waited until today so I could discuss this
issue with the Board which I did this morning during our Administrative Meeting.
The BOCC appreciates the viewpoint expressed by you and others who have contacted us about the same
issue. I hope that by responding to this e-mail I will also respond to the others that have contacted us.
This is a very difficult issue and we certainly understand the concerns expressed. We have been working on this
question for several weeks now because of other concerns we have received. The Hearings Officer, Irv Berteig,
talked with us and established some gound rules which we have been trying to follow. Those are simply put:
1. Audio--the room must be/or have microphones so that everyone can hear (this means a minimum of 4
mic's)
2, Recording--the Hearing must be recorded and reproduceable
3. Size--the room must be large enough to accomodate 200-300 people
The order of preference then is
1. Superior Court Room--Courthouse
2. BOCC Chambers--Courthouse
3. Fort Worden
When measured against these standards we determined that your generous offer could not be accepted, primarily
because of the size of the Beach Club. We estimate that the occupancy of an expected 200+ could not fit in this
facility, and the Superior Court could not be taken off line for two days and the BOCC Chambers are also too
small. Fort Worden is an adequate facility and meets our other criteria also. We've just held a hearing there that
had 300 people attend and it was handled quite well. By the way, the law also requires us to provide 10 days of
notice before the hearing. Given the timing of the newspapers this would result in a further delay of the meeting.
Given all of this information the Board concurred with the decision and asked me to extend our sincerest thanks to
you. We trust you understand this decision and our reasoning behind it.
Let me know if you have any questions.
John
