SUMMARY: Controls movement of vehicular traffic safely through road construction projects
and other hazard areas, as needed, by performing the following duties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: include the following. Other duties may
be assigned.
Maintain a work schedule for part time flaggers and ensure that flagging needs for the Road
Department are met. Acts as Traffic Control Supervisor on department project as needed.
Provides Traffic Control in work areas; place signs, direct traffic, assist motorists at various sites
as directed. Acts as Traffic Control Supervisor on Road projects.
Instruct Road Department personnel and part time flaggers in the Flagging and Traffic Control
course.
Maintain current instructional materials for Flagging and Traffic Control Course.
Accountable for specific project steps, working in a team based environment and participating in
the annual training program and annual performance evaluation process.
Participates in self directed team process to set work level expectations, goals and objectives.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
This job has no supervisory responsibilities, but is a "lead" position in the division of
assignment. Lead responsibilities include assisting the Supervisor with interviewing, training,
planning, assigning, accounting for attendance, oversight of the off-hours emergency calls, and
directing work. Lead positions also provide input for appraising performance and assist in
addressing complaints and resolving problems.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and two thousand (2,000) hours
of experience in traffic control and/or flagging; or equivalent combination of education
and experience.
LANGUAGE SKILLS:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance
instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.
MA THEMA TICAL SKILLS:
Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole
numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent
and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY:
Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in

written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete
variables in standardized situations.
COMPUTER SKILLS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual should have knowledge of database
software; internet software; spreadsheet software and word processing software.
CERTIFICA TES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:
Valid Washington State Driver's License
Successful completion of traffic flagging course. Required to renew Flagging and Traffic
Control Card every 3 years.
Successful completion of WSDOT Traffic Control Supervisor Training.
First Aid/CPR certification required.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
Ability to successfully complete various required training classes and obtain certificates
necessary for functional skills performance, maintenance and improvement.
