Alert: Freezing rain likely Thursday night to Friday afternoon. Avoid non-essential travel, roads may be HIGHLY hazardous.
The National Weather Services is predicting a strong likelihood of freezing rain in Jefferson County beginning Thursday evening into Friday mid-day.
Residents are STRONGLY advised to avoid all non-essential travel during this time. The area of highest concern is 3AM to 12PM, although impacts may begin late Thursday night and last
into Friday early afternoon.
Freezing rain is rain that remains liquid until freezing on contact with a surface. Since it is in a liquid state until contact with a surface, it conforms to the shape of the surface,
effectively creating a smooth "glaze" that provides next to no traction.
It is a significant source of traffic accidents because of this, and even residents with 4WD/AWD or experience driving in snowy conditions are advised to avoid traveling if possible.
Additionally, freezing rain may cause downed tree limbs or power lines due to its weight as it accumulates. Power outages may be possible during this event, as well as roadway impacts
due to tree damage.
