Rebuttal to Trendwest Proposal
I would first like to address the statement make in Friday's hearing that building a
Trendwest Resort in Port Ludlow would bring economic prosperity to Port Ludlow.
If you only look to the Trendwest Resort built at Birch Bay and Discovery Bay,
Washington, you will note that neither location has received an economic boost from
the Resort built. Birch Bay was promised they would see a grocery store built in
their community if Trendwest was built there, yet none has ever been built.
Discovery Bay once had a great seafood restaurant, however, since Trendwest has
taken over that restaurant had to close.
If Port Ludlow Associates think Trendwest is going to be a boost in the economy
here in Port Ludlow, then why are they reducing all the current restaurants owned
by them as well as asking Jefferson County to allow they not build any of the other
amenities that were listed in the original development agreement that was to make
Port Ludlow a major destination resort. Numerous times PLA has publicly stated
that they cannot make Port Ludlow into a destination resort because it is no longer
a financially viable business. PLA has built no amenities since taking over from
Pope Resources, yet they have reduced them. The only thing that PLA has done is
build residential units and that is the only thing they wish to do. Master planned
Resorts are not just supposed to be residential units but instead residential is
supposed to support the resort but that is just the opposite of what is happening in
Port Ludlow.
Port Ludlow Associates has offered the golfers in Port Ludlow a new golf clubhouse
ifthey will support the Trendwest project. If you offer an incentive like this to other
groups in Port Ludlow they would probably be just as enthusiastic about Trendwest
being built as the golfers, however, PLA has offered to build a new clubhouse from
the very day they took over Port Ludlow, five years ago, and it has not happened
and most likely will never happen because it is just not financially feasible.
Tom Stone, the current President of the South Bay Community Association, spoke
during Friday's hearing and stated that he had conducted a straw vote of the
members at the annual meeting. He stated that 60 to 65 percent of the members
supported Trendwest and after setting up a web page for responses from members
received twenty-eight (28) responses. I attend that same meeting and Mr. Stone
also stated that the members were going to approve funding an enlargement to the
South Bay club and that his straw pole showed an overwhelming support for the
proposal, yet it was defeated by a very large margin. Just like this proposal Mr.
Stone is wrong. Mr. Stone, as President has made it very clear that he does not want
to do anything that will affect PLA from being able to build a new clubhouse for the
golfers.
There are other areas in Port Ludlow that are already zoned for commercial
activities that Trendwest could locate in. If Trendwest really wants to build in Port
Ludlow they could just as easily build on an area already zoned commercial'and not

on an area that isn't. The area they wish to build on is an environmental sensitive
area and should not have a commercial site built on it. Bringing 500 to 700
individuals a week into this area will not only cause damage to that sensitive site but
the whole Bay as well as cause a traffic nightmare to the community as a whole.
