The mission of the Quilts of Valor Foundation is to cover service members and veterans touched by war with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor. The Quilts of Valor Under Our Wings program is an exciting opportunity for youth to learn the art and skill of quilting, the joy of performing community and national service and the honor of awarding the Quilt of Valor to a local service member or veteran. Guided by experienced Under Our Wings mentors, beginning quilters will make their own Quilts of Valor for service members in their communities. This clinic is open to youth ages 14-18, with an interest in sewing and quilting. No sewing experience required. All supplies and equipment are provided. Recovering Pinto Abalone - Sun, Jan 22th <https://mcusercontent.com/18a86f67bdd611c999ee661f5/images/1194ecf6-dbfe-a1a2-5032-72d9cf1b6327.png> Pinto abalone in Washington waters have undergone long-term declines, are currently at an extreme low abundance and are facing potential population collapse. In 2019, the Washington Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW) listed this ecologically important rocky-reef grazer as a state endangered species. Puget Sound Restoration Fund leads a collaboration of recovery partners aiming to rebuild stocks to self-sustaining levels. A primary restoration strategy is the introduction of cultured juveniles into the wild; partners including WDFW, NOAA, the PTMSC, Seattle Aquarium, the University of Washington, Western Washington University and others have developed and implemented a conservation aquaculture program responsibly producing abalone progeny for outplanting. Over the past decade, partners have carefully released 45,000 genetically diverse, healthy Pinto abalone to 28 restoration sites in the San Juan Archipelago, setting the stage for scaled up recovery efforts to save this iconic species. They also accept clean and dry packing peanuts of all colors and types (separated from the styrofoam), as well as white styrofoam food trays that are clean and free of stains and writing. Your materials will be inspected at your vehicle, and disqualified materials will be returned to you. Thanks to the Fort Worden PDA, the styrofoam is packed and stored at the Fort Worden Battery Putnam, then delivered to Kent once per month thanks to OlyCap and Northwest Harvest food bank trucks. At the Kent facility, a densifier machine uses heat and pressure to convert the styrofoam into a toothpaste-like consistency that cools into heavy, glassy blocks, which are then sold to manufacturers of products such as picture frames, construction details, and surfboard blanks. The densified product is in high demand because it is less expensive than virgin plastic. Inspired by the AIR program in San Francisco, Recology, Glean in Portland, and the Recycling educational site at Signal Mountain TN, the A.I.R.E. Program aims to provide an artist in residency to a local artist while the artist in turn, will help bring to light our issues of waste through creative processes. A.I.R.E. offers mining privileges for materials at the dumping grounds at the Jefferson Co. Transfer Station from June – August 2023. The artist will earn a $2,000 stipend and can exhibit their work for a weekend in September 2023. Artists will be asked to spend 12-20 hours per week (2 of those committed to education) in the small studio/office on site or in their respective studios. The A.I.R.E. committee will be accepting application from Dec 19th 2022 through Feb 14th, 2023. Shelter recipients, most of whom have been living in tents since moving there, are eagerly awaiting their new, warmer and more secure, housing. These signs appeared along Sims Way in front of the OlyCAP offices. After 10 years they have developed a truly successful community garden, with amazing soil, sound infrastructure, and impressive production. It will be a huge challenge to continue this garden with a significantly smaller number of members. They are reaching out to would-be gardeners to consider joining us in 2023!
