As we recover from the weekend’s inclement weather and relief requests due to increasing COVID cases and the flu, this morning there’s another issue affecting service – tides. Due to a low pressure system over the area, tides are higher than forecast, which, in combination with snow melt off/rain, wind, and the incoming storm, are creating challenges for vessels docking at some terminals. When a boat docks, it must align with terminal infrastructure, which high tides make challenging, especially when a vessel is heavily loaded. Continuing service during those conditions may damage the terminal’s equipment, taking it out of service until it can be repaired. To ensure the safety of our passengers and to protect terminals’ structures, we have already suspended service on the Pt. Defiance/Tahlequah route and may have to do so on the Fauntleroy/Southworth/V ashon route, Seattle’s routes to Bainbridge and Bremerton, and at Edmonds/Kingston, which is already seeing flooding at the Edmonds terminal (pictures below). We will only suspend service if absolutely necessary to ensure customer safety and protection of terminal assets. Best, John John B.
