Playground Updates 2022 We are Open for Play and have seen daily use of the playground despite the weather! Thanks to all of our JUMP! supporters over these past 6+ years. The Grand Opening in November was a heartwarming testament to the amazing community we have in Jefferson County. Your financial support and the volunteers that provided in-kind donations of materials and labor, helped us create this amazing, accessible, inclusive multi-generational play space. We wish you many hours of enjoyment at JUMP! in the coming year. Phase 2 planning starts now! We had hoped to build the entire playground as planned, but budget overruns didn't allow for this. The existing playground has lots of different play features and you may wonder what else is there, and what more do we need. What's missing is the play structure we had designed for the 2-5-year-olds. Playground equipment is designed and rated for 2-5-year-olds and 5-12-year-olds. Separate play areas are often designed into playgrounds keeping this in mind, so the younger children don't get trampled or overwhelmed by all the big kids running around. Most of the existing features at JUMP! are for the older crowd. The Net Climber, which is the FIRST ACCESSIBLE Net Climber in the state of Washington, is designed for the 5-12-year-olds, along with the Rock Climbing area and slide structure off the hill. It doesn't mean the younger kids can't play on all of the equipment, but for some toddlers, a separate area with structures and sensory play geared for their age is much more inviting and safer. The hydroseeded space across from the swing set that is cordoned off with orange safety netting is the area that is reserved for the 2-5-year-old structure. Not only does it have play features for younger children, but the separate play space will help younger kids and parents feel safer. See the photos below for the Phase 2 intended play structure, another Art Gate, and a proposed shade structure to go over the Sea Snail Plaza for sun and weather protection. The play structure is ramped and includes a wheelchair-accessible rocking glider that accommodates multiple children in addition to anyone using a wheelchair. There are also more sensory panels, slides, and balance challenges. The structures, accessible surfacing, new art gate, delivery and installation costs are estimated at $300,000. We are still working on bids and estimates, so this is not a firm number yet. However, this is an informed estimate based on bids we have received and our experience with Phase 1. Phew!
