They’re called immunotherapies. Some of the first were developed at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center. Immunotherapies depend on a complex and expensive process to engineer immune cells, a process that's only available at a few places around the world. This can put them out of reach for people who need them desperately. That is about to change. Fred Hutch scientists have developed a simpler, less invasive, and much less expensive process that uses genetically modified, injectable nanoparticles, that deliver MRNA to patient's T cells. This reprograms the T cells to fight cancer cells. It’s essentially immunotherapy in a syringe. Early research led by Matthias Stephan, MD, PhD at Fred Hutch shows this technique could be effective against many types of cancer.
