January 20, 2023 <https://gallery.mailchimp.com/6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a/images/cf04e6fd-150d-4420-a926-ee7a36f2d944.png> STATE NEWS WA Still too Slow with Mental Health Services for People in Jail, Judge Told A federal judge is being asked to weigh in on whether Washington state’s social services agency should face consequences for major delays in providing mental health services to people in jail. Disability Rights Washington has filed a motion in federal court alleging the Department of Social and Health Services is in breach of a 2018 settlement to provide timely competency restoration services to thousands of people waiting in jails. The nonprofit civil rights group is asking the court to consider reinstating fines and using other means to compel DSHS into compliance. It was prompted by some statistics that residents might contemplate while pulling moldy “science experiments” from the fridge or deciphering use-by dates on packaged food. Organic matter makes up 23% of the materials going into Washington’s landfills. For residential trash alone, the figure is 33%. That is largely food waste, most of which was edible when it was tossed out. This training will be particularly beneficial to the newly elected but still valuable time spent for those of you with county elected experience. Gateway communities lie just outside or adjacent to major tourist attractions such as national parks, wilderness areas, or nature resorts. Many of these communities experience multiple housing challenges including – lack of affordable housing, available financing, and rapid population growth. The webinar will highlight federal resources and private sector strategies that help communities leverage their outdoor recreation and tourism venues to address housing solutions and improve economic resilience.
