It’s a pilot project for Amend, a program reshaping how people are treated inside prisons based on Norway’s experience in creating more humane conditions. The aim is to bring more human interaction into the lives of those inside, to get them ready to function better once they return to society. The Amend program, a public health and human rights program run out of the University of California San Francisco, is also being tried in California, Oregon and North Dakota. A resolution requests that any greenfield site in Pierce County be excluded from consideration for a new airport. There are currently two greenfield sites being considered in the area. Though the sites aren’t considered urban, there are still businesses who said their livelihood will be impacted. The end goals are to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and responsibly manage public resources. Learn More <https://wsac.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=6943e0d4535671f24022ca02a&id=050822dbfb&e=03d5c964a3> COUNTY NEWS Yakima County’s 2022 Jobless Rate Ties for Lowest Since 2010, But Recent Numbers Rising With a noticeable exception in the 2020 pandemic year, the average yearly jobless rate for Yakima County — and the state of Washington overall — has been declining over the past 10 years. Data released Tuesday from the state’s Employment Security Department shows the annual average unemployment rate for Yakima County was 6.3% in 2022, tying 2018 as the lowest annual jobless figure for the county since 2010. Residents in wildfire-prone communities may also have to spend more on power due to the increasing cost of liability insurance for utilities that serve those areas. A recent report by the Office of the Insurance Commissioner examined liability insurance access in Washington state, surveying 36 utilities. It found that while most companies were able to obtain affordable policies, the few that didn't have had "dramatic" cost increases.
