Dear John,
The Pacific Northwest is known as the Evergreen State, not only for our iconic Doug Firs but also because of our snow-capped mountains, our beautiful waters and beloved wildlife such
as our orca and salmon.
But these places that are the ancestral homelands of the Coast Salish Sea tribes are under attack from corporations who want to cut down our forests, poison our waters and pollute the
air. As the Washington State Chapter welcomed Ben on the second week of his Listening Tour, we had the opportunity to share the work that our volunteers, staff, and nearly 30,000 members
are doing to protect people and our lands.
We discussed everything from protecting legacy forests, iconic endangered species like orca and salmon, building electrification, housing and energy affordability – and how they all
intersect. Ben took time to listen to our expert staff about the victories we’ve been having, like clean building codes and phasing out gas powered vehicles, and how all of this works
to fight for environmental justice, reduce pollution, stabilize the climate, and improve lives.

Ben also took time to meet with Indigenous leaders who have been leading much of this work. He heard about the Indigenous-led efforts to remove hydroelectric dams, and how they threaten
the salmon and orca populations, as well as violate Tribal sovereignty and multiple treaties.
As Ben said, “It's been a reminder that as we change the way that the world is powered, we have to be very mindful of the social justice implications, the ecological implications, the
ways in which everything is connected. What can be a victory for climate can literally be a source of extinction for entire species, subspecies, families, and Tribes. And that’s a lot."
As Ben takes on his leadership role, what’s clear to me is that Washington is at the forefront of many environmental justice efforts thanks to our volunteers, partners, and members.
I hope that you are inspired to join our efforts!
Sincerely,
Sept Gernez (they/them)
Acting Chapter Director, Washington Chapter
