By overwhelming numbers, committee members got the message that SB 5688 is the wrong solution for supporting our communities and environment. But those pushing this bad bill aren't giving up. A nearly identical bill has been introduced in the House of Representatives - HB 1789 <https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Hf8cjarijf9Y_XUfd30xa83sQXSH3a wVpUlB1-DjFSOWCPzxvzhJZ7a65lbtZg85ptxXs9keX6vm_w0FqZANOIrSVTD2wKErIzg-Ys6nXZUFvqiwW3nT9hlcOuC2xfw3-Uz9qJosSfmowXuxScx62W39rnXkyywHbn8ktKdQ0_012zBXvJWMlYOCVpk0SE4SvyqvFC4YxX4=&c=wCXao2nXncmFimxB6TJlyd CMX8sRbHJ7BkZ4mnvbEd5xFDKwmgE7Fg==&ch=3Mo6o5gnXgcuAnPlZmOhQLRdzmCERVrJqPzpuBZV4CDPy8RxsapGdQ==> - where they have scheduled a hearing for Tuesday, Feb. 14. HB 1789 would allow the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to shut down thousands of acres of these working forests, and instead sell carbon offsets and other “ecosystem services” on unregulated markets for up to 125 years. Please help us keep up the pressure. Take just a couple more minutes and send another strong message to the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee by registering your official opposition on the Washington Legislature's website. Simply click the button below, select "Con" under the Position menu, enter the required information and click Submit! Before Feb. 14 at 9:30 am, click and sign in “CON” for HB 1789 <https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Hf8cjarijf9Y_XUfd30xa83sQXSH3awVpUlB1-DjFSOWCPzxvzhJZ7a65lbtZg853klnR_nRePQUDI7g9KKNapj6s7xKXFwFwleMx-b o-LRr0sTOkkkG0higA9Rk4Hn6lJScaivj8Qt2qo6V7tLqY3qQddyhiYg_soe7yloAFHZZFPH2VJs51h7M87iX-A4yEvj3R3U7aEY=&c=wCXao2nXncmFimxB6TJlydCMX8sRbHJ7BkZ4mnvbEd5xFDKwmgE7Fg==&ch=3Mo6o5gnXgcuAnPlZmOhQLRdzmCERVrJqPz puBZV4CDPy8RxsapGdQ==> Sustainable timber harvests from state-managed working forests <https://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?f=001Hf8cjarijf9Y_XUfd30xa83sQXSH3awVpUlB1-DjFSOWCPzxvzhJZ7a65lbtZg85kkvNQ4z1oRHRBExRwv9fwZ3_7tD52Qd7e12gIGG yUbqz8_QQAiAWvsa4w1_jWrFF41Dbi39khyL7mPKzU5FZc5g4pXpMG0dYy4OaYIp1J89qklYqDpQwbTvUgQzCzt5i50-tUZS8rvM=&c=wCXao2nXncmFimxB6TJlydCMX8sRbHJ7BkZ4mnvbEd5xFDKwmgE7Fg==&ch=3Mo6o5gnXgcuAnPlZmOhQLRdzmCERVrJqPz puBZV4CDPy8RxsapGdQ==> generate funding for schools and public services without raising our taxes. They also support jobs in our communities. But once again the DNR is asking the Washington Legislature's approval to push a carbon offset scheme that allows polluters to keep polluting at the expense of our communities. HB 1789 - just like SB 5688 - lets them set aside more forests to sell carbon offsets, which are expected to provide just a fraction of the revenue generated by sustainable timber harvests while requiring us to import more wood products from other countries and substitute less-environmentally friendly building products. Our message to Olympia is simple. Don't give the DNR an unlimited free pass to sell these “carbon offsets” that shut down working forests without reducing emissions or considering the environmental, socioeconomic, and fiscal impacts on public services. Please help us send this strong message to the House Agriculture and Natural Resources Committee. Register your official opposition to HB 1789 before Tuesday, Feb. 14 at 9:30 am to make sure your voice is heard. <https://imgssl.constantcontact.com/letters/images/1101116784221/S.gif> Sent to you by: Forks Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Lissy Andros, executive director Forks Chamber of Commerce 1411 S.
