There are many factors that affect an applicant’s qualifications, so we encourage you to apply and let us consider your entire situation to make a determination. How many applicants are you accepting? We will be accepting applications from anyone interested in applying. The number of homes that we anticipate building for this round of applications is seven, but that may vary depending on how many homes we can feasibly build. How do you choose people to be in the program? What makes a qualified applicant? There are three main factors taken into consideration: * Ability to pay Applicants must be able to afford a mortgage and demonstrate creditworthiness. * Willingness to partner Every person who participates in the Habitat program purchases their home with an affordable loan that Habitat helps organize. Every person who participates in the program is also required to put in “sweat equity” which is time spent contributing to the Habitat program. This could be anything from actually working on building homes, putting time in at our store, or providing some other contribution. We work with each individual to ensure that the sweat equity is doable, based on the person’s capabilities. * Need Often, we have more applicants than we have homes available. So, we evaluate applicants according to need. A review of need may include information such as: Is there overcrowding in the current living situation? Is the current living situation dangerous or unhealthy? Is the current living situation unsustainable? This is not an exhaustive list, as there are more factors that can play into need. David's presence and CP+ certification frees up the site supervisor to broaden their focus on the site. To earn his CP+ certification, David completed online courses in OSHA safety and first aid and will receive ongoing training. We had the opportunity to talk with David to learn more about him and his interest in volunteering with Habitat EJC. What led you to want to volunteer with Habitat? "I feel there is a need in our community for affordable housing, and I want to help be a part of the solution. When I became a homeowner, it was life-changing, it made me a better person in my community. I want others to have the same opportunity. I started volunteering intermittently at first, but loved it so much that I am now committed to serving as a volunteer one day a week each month." What would you say to others who are considering volunteering? "It took me a while to decide to volunteer, as I was not sure what to expect. But I remember my first volunteer job and I enjoyed myself immensely. Volunteering didn’t even feel like work! I would encourage people to try it. It is so rewarding and the Habitat EJC staff, and other volunteers, make it a very fun experience, too." Tell us a bit more about you. "Well, my background is in the military. I went to school through the GI Bill and studied heating and air conditioning. After becoming an apprentice, I worked various jobs as a Stationary Engineer in California and then rejoined the military serving in the Air Force Reserve Construction Squadron. My wife and I moved here from California in June 2020 to be closer to our son, who is an engineer for the PUD in Chimacum. Volunteering with Habitat has also been a great way to meet people and build community.
