Sarah and Owen Fairbank: The Heart and Soul of Jefferson Land Trust For more than three decades, Jefferson Land Trust has relied on the generosity, support, and skills of hundreds of dedicated volunteers since our beginnings as a grassroots, community-powered organization in 1989. This Valentine’s Day, as we celebrate the amazing contributions of all our volunteers, we’re honored to pay special tribute to two who have served the Land Trust and our community for the last 20 years: Sarah and Owen Fairbank. Since 2003, Sarah and Owen have dedicated countless hours, deep skill, and their whole hearts to the shared work of protecting the places that matter most in Jefferson County. As volunteers and generous supporters, they’ve guided the organization as it has grown — and inspired all of us with their warm and giving spirits. Changing the World with Art: Young Local Artist’s Commitment to Conservation Continues In 2018, when Aloura Remy was 14 years old, she hit on a unique way to help protect the planet and make a difference in her community. <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=7c0dcd4676&e=c62e014255> By creating beautiful wildlife-inspired drawings, paintings, prints, and greeting cards, selling them to the community, and donating 50% of the proceeds to Jefferson Land Trust, she’s been able to raise funds for local conservation while spreading awareness about our work to protect local wild places, open spaces, and habitat. Aloura is now 19, and her commitment to supporting the environment, as well as her commitment to her artwork, has not wavered. In fact, she now has a website <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com/tra ck/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=7c34e96e61&e=c62e014255> where people can view and purchase her watercolors, chalk and pastel drawings, sculptures, and more, and she continues to donate half the proceeds from her sales to Jefferson Land Trust. On March 16 from 9:00 to 10:30 am, we’ll gather online for this year’s program, First, Fall in Love: What It Means to Love a Place, presented by noted environmental advocate, moral philosopher, and award-winning author Dr. Kathleen Dean Moore <https://saveland.us4.list -manage.com/track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=feb17bba37&e=c62e014255> . We'll also discuss the complexities of what it means to love a place — whether it’s a hushed forest, a high meadow, or a rocky shore. When so many of our beloved places are threatened by development or decimation, she argues our love must go beyond celebration. To love a place, Dr. Moore suggests, is to pledge yourself to seeing it thrive — to faithfully defend it for all time. At last year’s Conservation Breakfast, we were thrilled to gather with more than 300 community members, and this year’s event promises to be another enriching educational experience. We hope you’ll pull up a chair, put the kettle on, and join us on the morning of March 16! The Land Trust is the right place for me to give back.” — Brian Rogers Elected in December 2019, Brian Rogers is entering his third year as President of Jefferson Land Trust’s Board of Directors. Ever since moving to Port Townsend seven years ago, Brian and his wife Sherry have spent many happy hours walking Cappy’s Trails in the Quimper Wildlife Corridor <https://saveland.us4.list-manage.com /track/click?u=25cbb92181e6db1730fe5fb21&id=3d4bec0f20&e=c62e014255> . Connecting to nature through this special place, and learning of our work to protect it, was what first motivated them to begin supporting the Land Trust in 2018. Brian was elected to the board and began volunteering to help care for and monitor our preserves the following year. Brian leads by example, encouraging collaboration and always volunteering wherever needed. He's made a point of learning about all aspects of our organization — from stewardship to philanthropy to operations to conservation to outreach — and understands the Land Trust from top to bottom. Thank you, Brian, for all you do for the Land Trust, our shared lands, and this community! This past summer, the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe approached the North Olympic Salmon Coalition (NOSC) to assist in revegetating the site of a newly constructed side channel on the Dungeness River a short distance upstream of Highway 101. The Caldero side channel project creates nearly 1,000 feet of off-channel habitat for both spawning adult salmon and rearing juveniles. For the next step in restoration, NOSC is enlisting the help of volunteers to help plant thousands of native plants. Volunteers will also enjoy snacks and a site tour.
