These tests, sometimes called liquid biopsies, could revolutionize cancer treatment. Since the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved the first liquid biopsy in 2016, the science behind them has advanced rapidly. Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center researchers are leading the way to new advances. UW Medicine physician and Fred Hutch breast cancer researcher Natasha Hunter, MD, PhD, recently led a clinical trial to investigate whether a blood test can predict how breast cancer patients will respond to chemotherapy. Liquid biopsies for prostate and lung cancer are also in the works. Not only can they reduce the need for invasive, painful, and often risky tissue biopsies, but future liquid biopsies could help researchers stay one step ahead of tumors and develop better anti-tumor therapies. “The liquid biopsy is not going to fix everything or cure everything,” Dr. Hunter says. “But it has many exciting applications.” The key to saving more lives is pushing the boundaries of what we know.
