All of these internships provide students excellent opportunities to get outside and learn real job skills for future environmentally related careers. Please spread the word to students you know who would benefit from one of these awesome experiences: Students in the Watershed Internship Applications Due March 7th Details: March 14th – May 11th (8 weeks/2 days per week) • Tuesdays and Thursdays from 3:30-5:00pm • Program will also include 2 field trip days in mid-late May to DNR State Forest land during school hours. Location: The Salmon Center in Belfair, WA • Paid internship! $15.74/hr • Must be able to provide own transportation to and from the Salmon Center. This internship is intended to expose high school youth to natural resource careers through hands-on experience with field professionals from several local organizations. Students will learn alongside employees from the Washington Department of Natural Resources (DNR), the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group, and more. Students will gain an understanding of climate resilience with a special focus on one of five watershed specific topics (Watershed Ecology, Watershed Cultural Resources, Forestry in the Watershed, Wildlife Biology in the Watershed, or Watershed Stewardship). Students will take what they learn to create a short lesson and activity that they will teach to 4th grade students at a field trip event on DNR State Forest land. The Hood Canal Steelhead Project is a collaborative effort between NOAA Fisheries, WDFW, the Skokomish Tribe, USFWS, Long Live the Kings, and HCSEG. This 16-year study aims to rebuild three steelhead populations in Hood Canal while evaluating the benefits and risks of hatchery supplementation as a conservation strategy. Seven streams are included in the project, and HCSEG is leading specific work on the Dewatto, Tahuya, and Little Quilcene Rivers. This position primarily involves field activities and data entry. These will include juvenile steelhead abundance monitoring, tissue sampling for genetic and age analysis, and rotary screw trap installation and operation. The Steelhead Research Technician will be working with HCSEG staff and volunteers as well as other partners in the project. Eligibility • Graduating Hood Canal region high school seniors who are planning to attend a two or four-year college or university. • Current college undergraduates are also eligible to apply who have graduated from a Hood Canal region high school. All applicants must have plans for a career in the field of environmental science, fisheries, biology, ecology, or other related fields. Students must be at least 17 years old, have a current driver’s license, and have a reliable means of transportation. Location: The Salmon Center in Belfair, WA • Paid internship! $15.74/hr • Must be able to provide own transportation to and from the Salmon Center. Field experience is the key component for those interested in careers in the biological sciences. StreamTeam interns gain these valuable skills in inquiry based field work, salmon ecology monitoring, and research that allows them to be competitive and desirable in the job market. Data collected in the StreamTeam internship relates to current projects within our organization as well as state, local agencies, tribes and consulting firms. The primary role of a Stream Team intern consists of creating and sustaining monitoring protocols on the current and newly restored river and estuary systems and performing habitat surveys on selected hood canal watersheds. Interns will survey existing Hood Canal river and estuary systems and collect data on important habitat indicators within these systems, such as fish, vegetation, birds, wildlife, water quality, and wood material.
