Protect our Northwest Salmon!
Tell legislators it's time to scale up critical salmon investments, reduce the backlog of of projects that have been identified and vetted, and ensure future generations have access
to salmon.
Take Action! <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=ccdb1af0e6af6d6870aca877021d9d0e93e34b48125109ee24788cf2e166c6beee016d9eff2138c3af37d8e4847fe29c961fcb0671c890508842b3c73ae60935>
Dear John,
Salmon runs continue to dwindle throughout the state, down to about 10% of historical levels across the Columbia Basin, throughout southwest Washington, and around the Puget Sound region.
However, every year, lack of funding stalls most locally developed, and regionally prioritized, salmon recovery projects. For the past several state budget cycles, the legislature has
funded only 15% of the projects identified. That is not enough to recover salmon.
Fortunately, with local expertise we know what it takes to protect and improve habitat for salmon in every salmon watershed in the state: preserving and restoring streamside vegetation
to keep water cool, decreasing stormwater and sewage pollution, removing or avoiding fish passage barriers like dams and culverts, and maintaining healthy nearshore and estuarine areas.
Now is the time to scale critical salmon investments for the future. Please contact your legislators to ask for substantial increases in salmon habitat investments like the Salmon Recovery
Funding Board and the Centennial Clean Water Program. These programs provide critical funds to protect and restore habitat for the future.
<https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=ccdb1af0e6af6d68721b1dc2b16d89eb25832e110e8a658e12f2f516ce0bf2bb0e481c5129775198c2aba80664cf27b7f50f5906e3a06a2e32b7eaee4cc798fb>
We are not doing enough to address the salmon crisis. Salmon are a keystone species, meaning as their numbers dwindle, other species are highly impacted – including the endangered Southern
Resident Killer Whales that rely on salmon. And people are clearly impacted by the loss of salmon – Tribes and other communities throughout the state rely on salmon, and their loss
has contributed to food insecurity and disruption to livelihoods.
By contacting your legislators today, you can remind them that every salmon recovery region in the state, including the waters around you, has a backlog of projects identified and vetted
to ensure that future generations have access to salmon. Yet the legislature has funded a mere 15% of those requests. That means the state is leaving on the table 85% of the project
funding we need to recover salmon.
What’s good for salmon is good for people. Please ask your legislators to fund salmon actions needed to protect and recover habitat and to reduce pollution – to benefit people, salmon,
and other wildlife.
Salmon have been a cornerstone of Washington’s ecosystems and cultures for thousands of years. The future of our state’s salmon populations stands at a crossroads today. By stepping
up funding, the legislature can help address the salmon emergency.
We can’t afford to short salmon and habitat any more.
Take Action Now! <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=ccdb1af0e6af6d6870aca877021d9d0e93e34b48125109ee24788cf2e166c6beee016d9eff2138c3af37d8e4847fe29c961fcb0671c890508842b3c73ae60935>
