Spring is a busy time here at the Salmon Center, and we have LOTS of different volunteer opportunities currently in action or coming up soon. As a grassroots nonprofit, we need YOUR help to ensure our programs are successful and thriving! Sweetwater Creek Cleanup Thursday, March 16th 9am-12pm Sweetwater Water Wheel Parking Lot Next to Belfair Elementary and across highway 3 from Mary E. Theler Center Volunteers needed this Thursday for the Sweetwater Creek Cleanup! Sweetwater Creek has potential to be a thriving habitat, however, this is a beautiful place needing love. We need YOUR help removing the last of the trash and debris from Sweetwater Creek, as we prepare it to be the future home of the Sweetwater Creek Waterwheel Park! We will also be joined by the incredible clean-up crew, TrashMash Litter Posse! So get ready for a productive cleanup day with lots of fun folks from the community. Belfair, WA 98528 Help us construct two raised accessible U-Pick garden beds! Volunteers will help us: prepare the garden area, construct the beds with cinder blocks, move soil, and more! Bring your own gloves if you have them! We have gloves available if needed. Please remember to dress for the weather. Belfair, WA 98528 Come join us for our first Family Volunteer Day at the Farm at Water’s Edge! This is an opportunity for parents & kids of all ages to help get the garden ready for spring and learn about organic farming practices. Work will include prepping garden beds for planting and mulching. Mid-way through the event, kids will break off to go meet the farm animals and then plant vegetable seeds in take-home grow kits. Families will get to continue caring for their seedlings at home until they are ready for harvest! Please dress according to the weather – we recommend closed-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Belfair, WA 98528 Come help the Salmon Center prepare for spring! We will be doing work at the Farm at Water’s Edge and in our native plant nursery. On the farm, we will be preparing the U-Pick gardens for planting delicious veggies that will be available to the community come summer, and in the nursery we will be preparing for the end of the planting season. Volunteers can expect to assist with various tasks such as weeding, mulching, prepping beds to be planted, installing trellising, and heeling in native plants, such as snowberry. Please dress according to the weather – we recommend closed-toed shoes and clothes you don’t mind getting dirty. Belfair, WA 98528 Help us monitor juvenile Chum Salmon on the Union River! We have been researching juvenile chum abundance, timing, and productivity for the past five years and we are seeking volunteers to help during the 2023 chum trapping season. As a volunteer you will assist HCSEG staff and interns to conduct rotary screw trap checks and learn about fish sampling protocols. All training, waders, and boots will be provided! Besides identifying and counting the fish in the trap, volunteers are encouraged to participate in the DNA sampling as well. Belfair, WA 98528 We are seeking volunteers to help monitor juvenile smolt traps on the Tahuya, Dewatto, and Little Quilcene Rivers as part of the Hood Canal Steelhead Project! As a volunteer you will assist HCSEG staff and interns to conduct rotary screw trap checks and learn about fish sampling protocols. All waders/boots/equipment will be provided! The traps are checked every day in the morning by interns and volunteers from April 1st to May 31st. You can sign up to help check either the Tahuya and Dewatto traps or the Little Quilcene trap. Volunteers will meet at the Salmon Center at 8:00 AM- unless another convenient location is agreed upon by volunteers and HCSEG staff.
