SUBJECT: PROCLAMATION re: Proclaiming the Month of April as National County
Government Month
STATEMENT OF ISSUE:
National County Government Month(NCGM) is an annual April celebration of county government.
Since 1991, the National Association of Counties (NACo)has encouraged counties to actively
promote the services and programs they offer. NCGM is an excellent opportunity to highlight
effective county programs and raise public awareness and understanding about the various services
counties provide to the community.
The County's coronavirus pandemic response highlights the importance of county government in
protecting our communities from coronavirus and other illnesses that have the potential to become a
pandemic. Counties provide a myriad of other important services to our communities.
FISCAL IMPACT
There is no fiscal impact to Jefferson County.

PROCLAMATION
WHEREAS, Washington's 39 counties serving more than 7 million residents provide
essential services to create healthy, safe and vibrant communities; and
WHEREAS, counties provide health services, administer justice, keep communities safe,
foster economic opportunities and much more; and
WHEREAS, each year since 1991 the Washington State Association of Counties and the
National Association of Counties have encouraged counties across the country to elevate awareness
of county responsibilities, programs and services; and
WHEREAS, Jefferson County and all counties take pride in our responsibility to protect and
enhance the health, welfare and safety of our residents in efficient and cost-effective ways; and
WHEREAS, in order to remain healthy, vibrant and safe, Jefferson County provides public
health programs that protect against disease outbreaks such as COVID-19; supports mental health
programs that help individuals cope with stress and anxiety; invests in infrastructure projects that
improve access to clean water and broadband internet; promotes responsible stewardship of natural
resources through sustainability initiatives; enhances quality of life through parks, trails and
libraries; ensures the humane treatment of animals; expands access to justice for all residents
regardless of income level; supports workforce development programs that prepare workers for
changing economic conditions; and fosters regional collaboration among neighboring jurisdictions to
address common challenges;
NOW,THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Jefferson County Commissioners do
hereby proclaim April 2023 as:
NATIONAL COUNTY GOVERNMENT MONTH
in Jefferson County, and encourage all County officials, employees, schools and residents to
recognize the importance of county government.
